  Not DRUGS, but "On a DRUNK".  Bassist Chaz Chandler went on to become Jimi Hendrix's manager, and was the person who convinced him to go to England, to get "discovered".  Singer Eric Burdon also went on to further fame with the band WAR, with the big hit "Spill The Wine".

  The dude was smiling, trying to contain his laughter. The reason is that for the final shot, they wanted the group together. Notice that the organist was beside the drummer during the song. He was being moved with the organ while he was still playing. Hilton Valentine clearly found it funny. These guys were young, young, practically kids, and you know how kids find certain things funny. Eric Burdon, the singer was 23, and yes, this song WAS their first record. So much talent back in the day. I'm 75 and this was my music.

  They recorded this song in one, I repeat one take, no auto tune just pure talent. The bass player Chas Chandler discovered Jimi Hendrix and brought him to England where Jimi blew up.

  I'm 70, so I wasn't in Pampers, I was in junior high. Many people will tell you that the 1960's British Invasion came in two flavors: The Beatles were the "safe" ones, and The Rolling Stones were the "bad" ones. But, The Animals were the SCARY ones! The brits were reinterpreting American blues and R&B records, but Eric Burden went right for the spirituals and the gospel roots of BLACK MUSIC. He wasn't messing, he had his eye on the mother lode. This song was over 100 years old when The Animals recorded it. There were many versions, Eric built this one from a record by Nina Simone. Later, she accused him of appropriation, both of her rendition and also her cultural. It took decades of record industry lawsuits to settle all the rights and royalties claims. In the end Burden was one of the artists that help get the industry to set aside a trust for the Blues and R&B artists who were exploited.

  It’s a Vox Continental organ. The first transistorized portable organ, it is a signature sound of the mid 60’s: used by the Animals, the Doors, Iron Butterfly, Lovin’ Spoonful, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Question Mark and the Mysterians, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Monkees, and many others. Reverse colors on the keys, hot orange case, chrome Z-frame. Very cool. What a haunting song, if you’re not hearing “sinister”, you’re missing it’s essential component. The “House” is a metaphor calling us all to what we know is not good, but we go anyway.
