I explain the chemistry — why yeast releases carbon dioxide for thirty-some hours, why mosquitoes follow CO₂ trails to your breath, and why this trap fools them into landing on a bucket of water instead. I also tell you the small habits that make the whole system work: eliminate standing water on your property every week (a teaspoon of water is enough for two hundred eggs), wear light-colored clothing in the evening, encourage the natural mosquito hunters — purple martins, swallows, bats. Consistent work suppresses your local mosquito population over the season. A trap run for one week catches some mosquitoes. A trap run all summer, refreshed every two days, paired with the larva bucket and the weekly water-pouring habit, quietly takes back your yard. And I am plain about the safety. BTI and spinosad are both rated among the safest larvicides ever made — gentle on bees, fish, birds, and people. But they are still pesticides. Read the label. Apply at the rate the package calls for. Keep the containers out of reach of children. Same care you would give any household chemical.
