  Having worked with some Mayan archaeologists in the past when I was a college student and later visiting some sites myself, it is well known that the Maya built large seagoing canoes to move trade goods up and down the Gulf Coast. It isn’t hard to imagine them pushing further inland and either establishing colonies or spreading their rituals among local tribes. It’s a shame that this was lost. Perhaps DNA could be extracted from the remains but the Smithsonian is notorious for “disappearing” artifacts and evidence that challenge historical orthodoxy.

  Wow my grandma was telling us kids the truth. She was in her late teens when they built that dam. She’s told us kids about a buried city under the river. And she called it an accident Indian burial site in a little village. Thanks I loved hearing more history about it. ❤

  Thank you. I have never heard this story before. According to my grandfather, there were lots of mounds, stone temples, and pyramids still standing in Kentucky when he was a boy. When I ask him what happened to them? He told me that farmers and other people reused the stones and plowed the mounds down. Daddy told me a story about Aztec Priests and Warriors carrying gold and ritual items into North America away from raiding Spaniards (who were killing those who resisted and taking gold, people, and other treasures away from the Aztecs in the South). The items were hidden in a cave where the bodies of the Priests and Warriors are still guarding the Aztec treasures. When Daddy was young, he explored many caves hoping to find the cave with Aztec treasures and the remains of those who saved them. He never found it; but, someone else may have. Many people have learned that if you want to keep your finds you cannot tell anyone that you have them.

  Mayan style temple and artifacts found in northern Georgia, similar Mayan style artifacts found in moundville and bottle creek mounds in Alabama. The clay used to make the long lasting Maya Blue paint on buildings in Mexico was tested and shown to come from the Alabama Delta . Amazing how some experts still believe the Rio Grande and Gulf was never crossed before European exploration.

  Being Cherokee, growing up in Cherokee, N.C. the elders use to tell us stories orally passed down,that we came from the mayans,that left and disappeared, they moved further into what is now the U.S.,so this is very believable.

  My uncle had a house boat on Norris Dam at point 4. Where we used to visit and fish and swim. &nbsp;There was a hill sticking up out of the water. When we climbed it, there were wild muscodines and there was a burial mound

  My Grandfather told me the story of his older brothers who had been among those who discovered these ruins. Their mother was Shawnee and she told them they must go back and make proper offerings to the spirits of the people who had lived there. &nbsp;They went back and performed the ritual as she had taught them to placate the spirits and ask forgiveness for their trespass. They quit the TVA program and never returned. My brothers and I were warned by our Grandfather to never go there and we never have.

  I was raised on Norris Lake and my dad’s family was very involved in the construction and maintenance of Big Ridge State park. &nbsp;There a lots of places to dive in the lake that you can still see foundations and graveyards specifically around Loyston Pointe. &nbsp;I remember still being able to see, what appeared to be a stone road coming out of the water along the banks near Big Ridge. To this day, my dad still says the eeriest dive experience he had was diving through one of the forest areas that was completely flooded when the lake was formed.

  Once again, a well-told story. My Grandmother had a great disdain for the TVA and when i asked her why, she said they used concrete, steel, water and time to hide truths. Unfortunately she said I was too young for her to say more. Guess this is, at least in part, what she was alluding to all those years ago. I am glad i now know this bit of history.
