At 78, Diahann Carroll Finally Revealed The Secret She Kept From Her Own Daughter

Diahann Carroll broke television's color barrier in 1968 as the first Black woman to star in her own non-servant role on American primetime. The NAACP celebrated her. Critics called her a trailblazer. But behind that carefully constructed image was a decision that contradicted everything the public believed about who she was. Born Carol Diann Johnson in the Bronx in 1935, she won $1,000 on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts at age 10, more money than her subway-worker father made in four months. By 15, she was performing at Harlem nightclubs under the name Diahann Carroll, collecting $50 in cash per night while attending the High School of Music & Art by day. She learned to apply stage makeup in train station bathrooms and perfected a smile that gave nothing away. Those years taught her how to show people exactly what they wanted to see while hiding everything else. In 1954, she landed House of Flowers on Broadway at 19. During the run, she met Sidney Poitier. Both were married. Both were in their twenties. The affair lasted nine years, conducted in hotel rooms under fake names, separate entrances at industry events, phone calls timed around their spouses' schedules. In 1963, Sidney told her to leave her husband and wait. She filed for divorce, moved out with her 7-year-old daughter Suzanne, and rearranged her life. Months passed. He called less. His wife Juanita knew about the affair and they'd reached an arrangement. He never filed for divorce. The affair ended in 1968, not with drama but with exhaustion. Three months later, NBC offered her Julia. The show premiered in September 1968. She won a Golden Globe and got an Emmy nomination. But while America watched her make history, she was hiding something that contradicted everything Julia represented. In 1959, while she was with Sidney, Diahann became pregnant. She had an abortion. Sidney made it clear he wasn't leaving his wife, and she couldn't face the scandal. She never told Suzanne. Not in the sixties, not in the seventies, not through decades of interviews. The secrecy ate at her for 40 years. It explained why intimacy felt dangerous, why she kept even her daughter at a careful distance. Diahann was 78 when she finally told Suzanne. The revelation came because she knew she was dying and couldn't leave without being fully known. Suzanne's first reaction was anger, not at the abortion itself but at the silence. Beneath the anger was understanding. The failed marriages, the pattern of choosing unavailable men, the distance suddenly made sense. Diahann had been carrying a secret that contradicted the image she'd built, and that contradiction had created a wall between who she was and who she could let anyone see. They had three years after that conversation. Three years of knowing each other without the barrier. Diahann died in 2019. Her memoir, published in 2008, included the affair, the pregnancy, the choice. She didn't soften it. She told interviewers in her final years that she didn't want to be remembered as perfect. She wanted to be remembered as real.
