The inventor was originally trying to bake chocolate cookies instead, but didn’t have enough chocolate. She chopped up the chocolate that she did have into chunks then mixed it into the batter hoping that it would melt into the dough and turn into chocolate cookies while they were in the oven. CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES WERE QUITE LITERALLY A MISTAKE!!! (A delicious mistake, but a mistake nonetheless) 💖🍪💖

Altitude isn't the only thing that effects baking. Humidity can also effect it, especially for confessionary.
