According to the UK Government’s DoE: ‘…any attempt by a Head Teacher to use exclusion as a tool to ‘set an example’ is considered unlawful and unacceptable.’ Translation: Kids know they cannot be expelled.

Some consequences:
*With the State enforcing its irrational regulations, teachers have no individual autonomy & therefore no authority.
* Kids are smart & quickly learn that teachers have no authority.
* Kids also learn there are no meaningful consequences for bad behaviour.
*This might incentivize some kids to pursue bad behaviour as a means of getting attention.
*Kids are implicitly taught by society that they have a ‘right’ to education, that they are ‘entitled’ to it; logically implying they should decide what that looks like.
*Teachers spend less time teaching & more time battling the wills of the kids.
*Poor conditions & support for teachers leads to a lack of motivation & lower level of performance.
* The more ambitious & creative teachers, on having their individual autonomy removed by the state, leave teaching.
*Because the State provides a one size fits all, there are fewer specialized schools, less innovation in teaching & kids get taught subjects they will never use.
*Kids that actually want to learn & who would so under the right conditions; who’ve had a modicum of discipline installed by their parents, have their education & future sacrificed for the sake of ‘the public good.’

No need to target ALL English children.
That's called racism.
Maybe all Egyptian children are perfect?

Could you advise what schools should kids go to? I feel state is what you describe but I'm not sure private schools are any better ...

In some cases it might be gentle parenting. I don't think there is a right and wrong because they also do what their peers do. If it becomes acceptable that you are rude or walk out (no immediate visible consequences)
And I think there is a lot of neglect, carelessness and not spending time with kids or indeed this might be how they are treated at home. You got to learn somewhere

This is a very selective view of the worst of the "Educating..." series. The girl you decide to single out as "weak" at 22.43, has actually just been told the her brother is about to go prison for a very long time, and she was deeply traumatised. Did you bother to mention the mitigating factors? No, you didn't. In the most recent series of Educating Yorkshire, things are very different. My mother was a schoolteacher in the early 1960s. She was threatened repeatedly, kids smashed up the furniture and pooped on the desks. It's always going to vary, depending on area and class. Oh and by the way, you speak sloppy English. You keep pronouncing your 't's as 'd's.

I grew up in the UK and fortunately I come from a good family that taught me to be respectful and have good manners but I was horrified to see what teachers at my school had to put up with and I'd never teach in the UK in a million years.

I try to explain to people in the UK whenever I get the chance just how bad it is in schools because a lot of people (older generations mainly) are oblivious.

I actually think the T.V series understates just how bad it is. I wish I went to that school in Yorkshire.

My school closer resembled a class C prison. Overcrowded, dangerous, lacking in any order or discipline.

And you're right, the rest of society has gone in the same direction. You're wrong about Brits being the same back in the 1940s and 1950s It's all gone downhill since the 1960s. That culture revolution set the trend for what we have today.

Also, I would be careful about saying 'english people'. These are kids, most English people of course are not this bad (although there are some)

Also you're genetic argument is ridiculous. If I made an argument saying black Americans are stupid because slave holders chose stupid black people to enslave because they'd be easier to control I would have the police on my doorstep. But I guess it's okay to say this about us. It's a cultural phenomenon, schools were nothing like this pre- 1960s. In fact in England for a long time schools kept corporal punishment while many other countries had banned it. British schools used to be very strict and respectful. That's where the tradition of calling teachers 'sir' and 'miss' come from

How was your experience in UK grammar schools? Was it the same as UK non selective state schools?

Irrespective all the derogatory and borderline racist references to 'the english' in this video, white British students remain the highest performers in UK Universities by degree classification, followed by asian students. Black students are the poorest performers by far.

I've been teaching in a mainstream comprehensive school for the past 26 years and most of the students have been delightful. Unfortunately the skillset of many a foreign teacher doesn't extend beyond 'chalk and talk' and they often lack the charisma or language skills needed to engage students. It's therefore inevitable that they struggle to hold the attention of classes.

The video out-takes used here are all from difficult school settings deliberately chosen for TV drama. They are not representative of the typical experience of teaching in the UK.
