As a kid, can you imagine living through a horror movie! This young girl fought through the worst and she came out on top!

She went through hell before she even joined the Marines. I hope the rest of her life is peaceful and successful.

😮💨. I almost followed my older brother to Iraq/ Afghanistan, my mom, determined not to let her lil girl run off to war, tracked my brother down somewhere in the Middle East, calls me right as I walked in the house from school, told me I can’t help keep my platoon alive, if I don’t know where my baby sister is. He said “this was the worst thing I’ve ever done in my life, worst mistake ever.” “ I did it to run away from home, to get away from da-“ And the line goes dead. Waited for weeks to hear from him. Imagining the absolute worst. My dad was also in the Middle East, he was in the Corp 19 years when 9/11 happened, about to retire, but extended his Marine Corps career. Finally get a call, again right as I walk into the door, and it’s my brother. He said “ sorry sis, comms went down.” And took weeks to repair. When in actuality his platoon got ambushed, and just before he hung up I swore up and down I heard gunshots. I lost my ever loving mind. So he calls right as I walked in the door, I dove after the phone and I remember letting out a deep breath like I had held it for weeks. Sobbing, I could hear him holding back tears, said he was sorry. I told him to never let that happen again, as if he had any control over that, but the strongest man I knew disappeared for weeks, and had finally called. My maw had lost the twins during that time, because of the stress.

All of that is to say, Sgt., Gunalchéesh for the work you do, it is no easy thing to be deployed. But what you did in IT, helped the families back home have some relief when they hear back from their loved ones. Thank you for keeping the grunts and every single soldier safe and able to communicate with each other, & back home.

I know you blame yourself for what happened to your comrade, but from anyone who has listened to your amazing feat of a story, you we’re being abused, mentally, physically and sexually, and pregnant in a war zone. I’m sorry it happened, but I don’t think I could have ever blamed you. You are one of my heroes, just listening to you today. I dreamed about joining the military. But everything happens for a reason. I had my kids when I was 25,26. So in quick succession, I cannot imagine life without them. Again thank you

We all go through 💩 in life. Some, more than others. If you get through it and how you get through it often determines your character makeup, personality and approach to future challenges. Kudos to you Savannah, for slogging through all of that adversity...
Rah!! 💪🏽🇺🇸

First let me say Semper Fi Sister. I just came across your story on Urban Valor, and thank you for sharing it. Thank you for your bravery in speaking your truth, and I hope this helps those in a position of leadership to help our sisters and for them to be more empathetic leaders and I hope it helps any of our brothers and sisters that have had to deal with trauma and abuse.

I wish you the best, and hopefully one day we can get people like yourself to run for office.

WTH! This was a horrific story! It had me wishing I was there for her. I’m a female and I had a career in the Air Force, best thing I ever did. What I hear a lot on this page is if you want to be great, be a Marine and that’s not totally correct you can be great in any branch of the military. From what I understand Marines overall is brutal branch for any man so I can’t imagine how she made it through the Marines. Congratulations to her. Regarding her childhood trauma, you could see how she unconsciously followed her mom’s patterns of picking abusive men. We often do what we see. I did that in a different way and overcompensated which I still go to therapy today to be the best person I can be. I didn’t go through all that she did but I had my own issues and struggles so I can appreciate the hard work she’s had to do in order to become the person she is today. She’s very intelligent and I think that had a big part in her recovery. I wish her the very best because she deserves it, we all deserve to be happy. I was happy to hear she was having healthy relationships with other people especially women. We all need someone to talk to and be there for us.
