Another outstanding episode. I don’t know this guy personally, but I know him. I spent over 20 years on active duty and I don’t know how to say it in a way that makes sense to anyone outside of the USMC, but if you’ve ever been curious about what it’s like to hang out with a Marine infantry NCO, this is it. The way he talks, the shit he says, etc are very typical of a Marine grunt NCO. And that’s meant to be an accurate description as well as a compliment. Marine Grunt NCO is an elevated life form.

Retired USMC Infantry Grunt here too (94-13)! Man oh man, your so correct about SOI... Thank goodness back in 95, things changed. As we soon to be Grunts no longer had to go through MCT, only ITB... And yes, I remember some of those instructors were $hit bags too...
However, back in 2000, I departed 3/4 stationed in 29 Palms to MCT, SOI (E). Yes, I remember some Troop Handlers/Combat Instructors weren't the best, but a lot of them, especially Golf Company were solid... I loved teaching/instructing to the young Marines. Infact, years later, while at the Exchange (PX) I had a Gunnery Sergeant approach me, giving me "thanks" as he informed me that I was his instructor... I enjoyed this job so much, after returning from FMF, I was the reassigned to ITB, then later to AITB (Combat Hunter). Again, I had a blast... And no, I'm not a "skater" from FMF, as I (unfortunately) did x8 deployments in my career...

Unfortunately, I retired from Paris Island, SC. No! Thank goodness I wasn't a hat (drill instructor), but was the Basic Warrior Training Chief Instructor. Again, I had good instructors, some DIs getting a break. Of course I didn't agree with all the curriculum as some were designed for DIs to play games with the recruits (assault course)... Of course, games were never in my tool box, so we (BWT Instructors & I) usually kicked them (DIs) out from our training.... and you're correct, when I departed, AT-4 training wasn't part of our training curriculum.

As you can see, similar back ground... After retirement, I could only handle x5 years at my local Sheriff's Office. So, I then began my Contracting Career for 5.5 years over at the US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. Before departing this, I was the lead instructor who trained a team of Close Protection Unit (CPU). The vetted local Iraqis who provided security, but also we're our terps (translators) too.

Semper Fi & God Bless!

Thank you for your service and thank you for saying "those incidences" instead of saying "those incidents".
