Connor, regarding the 2021 F1 Abu Dhabi championship decider...

On lap 53/58, Nicholas Latifi crashes into the barrier, which results in the deployment of the safety car. During a safety car period, the race is neutralized for everyone, and teams must decide whether to pit for fresh tyres or stay out on track to maintain/gain track position over those who choose to pit.

At that moment, Hamilton was leading the race, with Verstappen running second. Because Latifi’s crash happened so late in the race, Mercedes were unsure whether the race would be able to restart under normal green flag conditions, or whether it would simply end behind the safety car. As a result, Mercedes elected to keep Hamilton out on track in first place on his old tyres. Mercedes were also cautious because if they had pitted Hamilton for fresh tyres and Red Bull chose not to pit, Verstappen would have inherited the race lead, putting Hamilton at a disadvantage in terms of track position.

Red Bull on the other hand, decided to pit Verstappen for new soft tyres. However after rejoining the track, Verstappen found himself stuck behind cars that were one lap behind positioned between him and Hamilton.

Normally before the safety car period ends and the race is resumed, all the lapped cars are instructed to overtake the safety car and drive at normal racing speed to catch up to the end of the safety car queue. This ensures all cars will be in their correct position when the race is resumed.

Whilst the race marshals were clearing Latifi's crash, race director Michael Masi informed the teams that the lapped cars would not be allowed to overtake. This signaled to everyone watching live and to all the teams that the race was going to finish behind the safety car - meaning no overtaking, with all cars slowly following the safety car to the chequered flag.

Throughout the 2021 season, Hamilton and Verstappen had battled each other across 21 races, arriving at the final round in Abu Dhabi tied on 369.5 points. Hamilton already had seven world championship titles, tied with Michael Schumacher, the only other driver in history to have achieved that number. Hamilton was on course to win his eighth world championship title, which would have made him the most successful driver in Formula 1 history since the sport officially began in 1950.

Verstappen meanwhile, was chasing his first-ever world championship title.

On lap 57/58 - after some heated radio exchanges between Christian Horner (Red Bull team principal) and the race director Michael Masi on why the lapped cars were still not allowed to overtake the safety car, Masi out of nowhere ordered only the lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen to overtake the safety car and join the back of the queue, not ALL the cars that were a lap behind.

This was the primary source of controversy, since you can't just let a couple of cars unlap themselves. Rules state that either all the cars unlap themselves or none.

The second controversy was when Michael Masi ordered the safety car to come back into the pits, when the lapped cars hadn't even finished unlapping themselves. The safety car came back into the pits on lap 57/58, which meant that we then had just one single lap of normal racing to finish the race. The 2021 drivers championship was going to be decided on just one lap of racing, with Hamilton on old used tyres and Verstappen on new soft tyres right behind him, with no lapped cars to interfere.

And then, the rest was history. Hope this managed to explain the 2021 Abu Dhabi controversy. Michael Masi was then fired from his position as race director, as he had basically admitted to being pressured to avoid having a safety car finish be the way the championship was decided.

In Formula 1, we're used to the teams breaking the rules, or reading between the rules to gain an advantage. Although there have been instances in the past where race control, stewards or the FIA themselves acted contrary to the written regulations of the sport, Abu Dhabi 2021 was the first time the race director explicitly did not follow the written safety car procedures where the outcome directly decided a championship.
