my grandfather was a pioneer of vagus nerve research and its impact on psychosomatic conditions— this gives me a better sense of how impactful and necessary his contributions are <3

It's also a strike point to incapacitate an attacker. Some martial arts techniques teach how to strike the vagus nerve in such a way that the attacker is rendered unconscious. It will literally shut the body down. There is a risk of permanent damage or death if struck too hard, so it requires the right amount of force applied to the exact spot. It reminds me of the Vulcan grip from Star Trek.

Interesting! There's a "What happens in vagus, stays in vagus" joke here somewhere.

10:56.... My daughter has CP and epilepsy due to a birth injury. She had up to 20 seizures an hour, before her VNS. She's now 30 years old, on her 4th VNS ( they don't simply change the battery at the end of it's life. They implant a new unit) , and it's very rare that we can even detect a seizure! Those things can REALLY improve quality of life !!

When you said `Exit` for `Efferent`, I felt sure you were going to say `Arrivals` for `Afferent`

Fascinating that 80% of the vagus nerve is sensory traffic going up to the brain! Perhaps this explains how GLP-1 medications like Semaglutide utilise the vagus nerve to send constant fullness and satiety signals from the gut to the brainstem 🧠

Informative, authentic content. I love this channel. I've recently experienced trauma that's left me anxious and vulnerable. I never thought humming could be so beneficial, but it certainly has been for me. Chanting has been practiced for thousands of years, for good reason. I now hum when I'm in a store, the post office or at a gym. One can hum without making much noise. It's the vibration that matters. And .. it's free. I do agree that far too many gimmicks or new devices are money-making scams. Best to avoid those.

breathing slowly also works on a psychological level. It tricks the brain into thinking everything is okay and you are safe. It's like forcing a smile or laugh to make yourself happy. We are dumb animals at our core.
