Devdutt on Ramayana, Mahabharata, Consent, and Mythology | Bani Anand | After Hours with AAE S2

Join us for this insightful episode of After Hours with All About Eve as Bani welcomes renowned mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik, embarking on a profound exploration of Indian mythology, ethics, and the intricate web of societal constructs. Devdutt's knowledge shines as he skilfully explores mythology, linking ancient tales with fundamental ideas like fairness, justice, and the divine. With clear and deep explanations, he shows how these stories provide insight into human nature, shaping how we see the world and ourselves. Bani then asks Devdutt about the belief in reincarnation and its origins. Devdutt explains that reincarnation, much like God or the devil, is a shorthand to make sense of life's unpredictable and uncontrollable aspects. He illustrates how these constructs help explain disparities in life - such as wealth or disabilities, through the lens of karma and rebirth. The conversation then shifts to the concept of Sati. Devdutt unpacks its three distinct meanings: Sati as a goddess, Sati as a historical practice, and Sati as a mythological concept. He shares fascinating insights into the story of Sati and Savitri, highlighting the difference between the cultural narrative of a 'faithful wife' and the original story of a heroic woman who defies death to save her husband. As the podcast progresses, Devdutt delves into the depiction of women in Indian epics. This leads to a fascinating comparison between Sita and Draupadi. Devdutt contrasts their approaches and outcomes, noting that Sita ensures her children inherit the kingdom, while Draupadi's pursuit of revenge results in personal loss. Bani questions the cultural obsession with fidelity and the unequal application of chastity norms. Devdutt explains that these constructs are rooted in ancient property and mercantile civilisations, distinguishing between matriarchy and matrilocality, and tracing marriage origins back to the Mahabharata, which depicts a time before marriage existed. He notes the reluctance to keep the Mahabharata at home stems from its unsettling knowledge, advocating for embracing such knowledge to find life's solutions. One of the standout themes in this podcast is consent, as highlighted in the Ramayana. Devdutt explains how ancient texts address mutual respect and agency, concepts often misunderstood in modern interpretations. The interview then touches upon the differences in monogamy and polygamy across cultures, noting how these societal constructs are interpreted in various mythologies, from Greek to Middle Eastern. Devdutt explores the behaviour of gods like Ram and Krishna within their familial contexts, emphasising that their actions are influenced by their roles and backgrounds. A significant part of the discussion revolves around the concept of 'Darshan' – observing without judgement – which Devdutt believes is essential to truly understand mythological stories and their deeper meanings. As the interview winds down, Bani asks Devdutt how he unwinds after a busy day. Devdutt reveals that he finds immense joy in writing, describing it as therapeutic and rewarding.
