Attempts to replace or at least improve the analog TV standard also happened in the PAL world. Throughout the 80s and into the 90s the MAC system (multiplexed analog components) was developed, with D2-MAC being the direct replacement for standard definition PAL and HD-MAC an analog high definition system. These systems were never widely adopted, and after public funding ran out in the early 90s, mostly abandoned. In the mid 90s the PALplus standard came on the market, this was most notable for its 16:9 mode, other than that improvements were relatively minor, which meant that again this standard was never widely adopted, and after a few years, with digital TV on the horizon, even public TV stations stopped equipping their transmitters with PALplus equipment.

Random comment I know but I really enjoy the "doot do do do doooo" sound effect when you switch between segments.

480p requires twice the scanline frequency of 480i. So even though EDTV couldn't get its resolution all the way up to the levels HD had, it's still impressive by analog standards.

12:02 I guess that explains why the 480p mode on the Wii was labeled as EDTV.

I remember this. I almost bought an EDTV. Then I realized it was a dumb idea and should just wait and save up for the real thing, which I did.

Even as a nerd who knows about MUSE, EDTV, and the MAC/MAC-2 system in Europe, I have never heard of IDTV until this video.

I went frame-by-frame when you were comparing the lag between the CRT and the LCD, and they actually start up on the same frame. The only difference is that the LCD is at half brightness on that first frame. That's actually really impressive.

Jokes on you. I'm watching this video in 240 for that 2006 YouTube feeling.

I like how the digital switchover was carried out in the US. We were not so lucky in Slovakia. When the analog TV broadcasting was turned off, DVB-T with MPEG-2 was set as the standard. TVs with MPEG-2 decoder only were quite a bit cheaper than their MPEG-2/MPEG-4 counterparts, so many people have bought them (except for those also wanting to watch Hungarian digital TV, which was MPEG-4 from the beginning). Later, the standard was changed to MPEG-4, because it was more efficient, and later the paid TV multiplex was changed once again to DVB-T2 with H.265, so people needed to upgrade their TVs or converter boxes. As far as I know, one had to buy a converter box here, there wasn't a free option.

EDTV helped bridge the gap in the early to mid 2000s for upgrading their standard definition TVs to slightly better picture. I had an EDTV in college dorm for GameCube, Xbox, PS2, Wii game consoles.

Back in 2010 I was a service technician for a Samsung service center, and I saw the first digital HDTV signal tests in Samsung Colombia's HQ in Bogotá, I was blown away, because the standard still in use in Colombia along the DVB-T2 is the NTSC analog 480i, so the jump to 720p/1080i was huge!, no IDTV or EDTV shenanigans, just SD to HD in a single blow.
