Okay, here's a REALLY funny mistake I made: Every picture of the Ritty "Dial" machine is not just a replica, but apparently a souvenir clock based on the dial design. I had several pictures of varying quality, and chose the one with the most readable face, without noticing that the inner ring is numbered 0-12 instead of 0-9. Honestly though, even if I had noticed I might have kept the image anyway because the clock looks almost exactly like the real thing, it's just much easier to make out - if you google "ritty dial" you'll see what I mean. Good times!

Postscript to above: Yeah, I just went through every other picture of this thing I can find, and it's clear why I picked this one. They're all illegible due to being made of etched, heavily tarnished brass, so I definitely would have gone with this anyway and just explained the extra steps.

You may notice that the map of cash usage in Europe is specific to travelers from the UK. I got it from an article that also miscontextualized it, and I would have replaced it except that correct map supports the same point: most of western Europe is still using cash for half or more of their daily transactions. It is worth noting however that within the UK, cash is only used 15% of the time.

It seems like checks are more commonly used here than I thought, but I maintain my position that they are not taken seriously as a way to exchange funds, everyone hates them, and you will almost never see one in use except under some form of duress.

The funniest thing to me is this: Watch his hands.

There's an effortless, no-scope kinda motion he makes when he tears the receipts off that shows a deep, muscle-memory of running the register. He doesn't even know he's doing it. Just reach, tear, toss... It's a subtle dance, but I can appreciate it.

"this ain't no Dan Olsen video" my friend, Dan Olsen produces like two videos a year. your output rate of high quality fat-free super information-dense and long scripts, all very entertainingly shot and presented and edited honestly boggles my mind. your work ethic is crazy, and the videos you produce are on average excellent. please give yourself more credit

Got a smack on the wrist at my first job because I would drink too much coffee, get bored, and repeatedly hit the [no sale] key and pop the till open and closed hundreds of times for no other reason than some tactile stimulation. Didn't realize they were being counted. My drawer was never off by more than a few cents though.

I can tell you why we had register with the flip up window for the journal tape. We used to have to sign off on discounts and to accept certain checks. If it wasn't signed by a supervisor the cashiers butt was on the line if it was a bad check and to stop cashiers from giving 90% discounts for friends and family.

Can confirm. They will not read signs. Several years ago I was working at a store which had its entire credit system fail due to the modem used by the system going dead. We put up signs all over every surface in the store starting from the front door all the way to the registers saying CASH ONLY NO CARDS including right there on the registers right in front of their faces in a spot they CANNOT look at the cashier without seeing the sign. Literally everywhere. Customers would proceed to walk straight from the front door to the registers, see none of them, and immediately ask me to ring them up for something and pull out their card, get told they can't do that, and then get mad at me.

I’ve always wondered why I could spend HOURS in a Staples or OfficeMax even though there’s snowball’s chance I’m actually going to buy a neon OPEN sign, time clock, business printer, or cash register. You seem to capture that same interest. Thank you for saving me a trip to Staples.

To the point you made at 1:30:00 about a customer claiming they gave the cashier a $20 when they gave a $10 — I used to see cashiers leave the bill I paid with sideways across the top of the till when counting out my change for exactly this reason. If there was a dispute, they could show me the bill I gave them. Haven't seen that recently; probably was part of the same kind of training where the cashier "counted up" the change from the total to the amount the customer tendered, showing that the correct amount of change was being given.
