They are masters of making YOU feel sympathy, and they always remember to say the right things to appear nice. Guilt tripping, joking criticism, or &quot;Im just being honest&quot; excuses. It&apos;s like a cat making bird noises, they don&apos;t care what it means just that it works. Girl groups do this to each other too to have dominance, they make sure everyone is getting along (with them).

  I absolutely did grow up being smothered by my mother who cared only that her twisted version of reality was the one that was the focal point of everyone living with her. Like Gothel, my mother was super subtle about her cruelties, while appearing warm and nurturing on the surface. But that &quot;care&quot; was strickly dependant upon how completely we lived within the ever-changing rules of her twisted reality without pushing back or expressing hurt feelings when we were slighted. If we pushed back, we were being rebellious and needed to get back in line or God was going to become extremely angry with us for disrespecting her. If we expressed our hurt feelings about being slighted, we were told it all in our head; that we imagined a slight that didn&apos;t happen in reality.

  Thanks for calling out and explaining covert narcism (parenting) to the world. <br>It&apos;s hard to explain by single examples + even harder, cause the narcissistic people often behave different to different persons.

  I loved that this movie had outlined the subtle abuse of parental figures. I was already an older teen when this movie came out, so I had some exposure to such as abusers, and I&apos;m glad that the younger generation could see what the movie is showing and not just telling.

  My step mother literally saw herself in mother Gothel. She loved to quote the &quot;mother knows best&quot; line. Growing up with that woman was hell.

  after the analysis as to why this movie was my favorite and why tangled became my favorite princess: it hits hard. because i didn&apos;t realize HOW MUCH i saw myself in her. HOW MUCH of her life could correlate to my own. and until watching this... yeah, i didn&apos;t realize that.

  No, because I was raised by shitty parents, and every time I try and bring up something to my mom in an adult way, which I am an adult, I am called oversensitive. and she was just teasing blah blah blah blah. So, yeah, suffice to say once I&apos;m moving out, I&apos;m blocking her because that&apos;s not worth the stress. Me constantly being agitated and on edge when she doesn&apos;t listen. So... and the damage has already been done. Also.....holy fuck man...this hits deep

  The thing is... I <b>knew</b> Gothel&apos;s words weren&apos;t kind or loving. I knew she was toxic and manipulative. I just never forced myself to stop and think about how it reflected my own life.
