  Here in Australia we’ve had similar services for some time. These services have been very profitable. Interestingly with the recent battery rebate from the Australian government we’ve seen nearly 190,000 home batteries installed in six months. Added to this has been the large enterprise solar and battery projects pushing our renewable generation towards 80% or total demand. This has led to a slowly flattening effect on the duck curve and less of those energy spikes (or events as you call them) that make the money. Also the industry is starting to react to this with pressure to change the billing to push more of the cost from consumption to daily fixed costs like grid connection. So typically we might spend $1 a day to connect to the grid $1 a day to the supplier and the rest of the energy costs or profits leverage by tariffs that change every 5 minutes left to the activities of the household. This is where cleaver users can turn usage cost to profits by shifting loads from expensive periods to cheap and exports from cheap to expensive etc. But now they are trying to remove costs from the consumption side of the bill to the fixed connect fee so perhaps $2 to connect to the grid and cheaper supply tariff (and cheaper feed in tariffs) reducing the ability to take profits from spot trading. Bastards
