Back in my childhood in the 60s, I saw a "humourous" quip: Home is where a man goes when he's tired of being nice to people.

15:45 taking the break isn’t the problem. It’s the fact he never comes back around to resolve the issue, and expects you to just pretend it never happened.

I am realizing that we can be harmful not just hurtful without being an abuser. Damm that's a good point

18:48 Exactly! A former running partner of mine is ex-military. He has a particularly abrasive sense of humour, but so do I. He told me one of the things that initially drew him in about me was I would fire back. Always in good fun, and he always poked fun at inconsequential things that I would change if I was insecure about them (like my gray hair, for example, and I in turn would lob a jab about his perpetual bedhead. All in good fun and we both knew what was fair game).

But one time, I shared something particularly vulnerable with him. He cracked a joke, presumably to lighten the mood, but it didn't land well. I snapped, "That's not funny." And instead of saying "It was just a joke"(which didn't need to be said...), he apologized immediately for what he had said. Then later, he texted me a more fulsome apology, really laying out how he understood how the joke was inappropriate and how truly sorry he was for it. And I was left realizing I don't think I've ever gotten an apology like that from any other man in a similar situation. Just goes to show, I suppose, how much that guy actually cared about me.

My abuser told our son it’s his JOB as a boy/man to fight against women and girls ALL the time, because we are all “the enemy”. We left years ago but he’s still threatening us constantly. So tired.

7:20 OH MY GOSH! THE TONE!

One of the reasons I realized my husband was having an affair with his "friend" was when I overheard him explaining something to her, and he used the exact same contemptuous, dumbed down, "this is why we're doing it my way" tone that he only used with me. I had never noticed he only used it with me until that very moment. He NEVER spoke to his friends like that 😮💨 Broke my heart twice

The kids you create feel it, too. "Dad is only present to say no, we always have to guess his mood. Dad always puts his own needs first but still demands respect even though he is never present, never cares, just because he earns money for us (in the best case), which he hates."

My ex husband was like this. He made marriage so miserable that I lost all desire to be in a relationship with another man. I never want to work that hard again in a relationship.

My ex-husband used to say that he wasn’t punishing me when I brought up feeling hurt by his behaviour. Yet, he would he dismiss me/roll his eyes/give me silent treatment/yell, then shout at me ‘that’s it, I’m not going to spend any time with you’. Sounds like punishment to me.

Lisa, you'll never know how you've saved my soul and taught me how to love myself and what abuse looks like and feels like. When I get through this, you'll be the resilient voice and face that I'll see and be so thankful to have as guidance. You can read my life and give it words.
