Extra Context on the Infinity Nikki situation: in response to player complaints about the story being retconned and the original tutorial no longer being there, the official response was "Don't worry, we'll find a way to give you the dress from that eventually" as if the complaints were about the dress Nikki wore in that sequence and not the story implications.

That's the reasons many live service games have closed beta servers where approved volunteers from the payerbase can experience the upcoming changes ahead of time. Whether the developers actually take their feedback into consideration is another question, but at least in theory this measure can help avoid disasters.

Honestly, we should've known LADS was gonna end up in a hell hole considering what the devs did to Nikki just so they could make more money lol.

15:50 Wait.... so THAT's what happened?? I put the game down (only a couple hours in) where a lady welcomed me into a magic school or whatever.... but when I then picked it back up much later, I wasn't where I left off, but was instead whished away into a whole new cosmic plot.

Don't get me wrong, as a Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy fan, I have no problem with stories that start out whimsical and then gradually evolve into end-of-the-world, but I didn't expect even an online gatcha game to just erase my current progress and drop me off somewhere completely new.

Jokes on me for not playing when the game was new and leaving it alone for so long I guess.

Man.... GITS: First Assault was so painful to watch it go down like it did, from what I remember on the forums it was felt that either cause they wanted to chase after the Overwatch/Hero FPS game crowd and that was why they made such a drastic update and got mad cause the player base reacted the way it did, or cause the owner of the IP didn't like the bad reaction the game was getting and had them pull the plug on it.

I'm not a fan of FPS pvp games, but I will have found memories of this one.

While it's gone, it's not forgotten and I think there is still a private server floating around.

What drives me up a wall sometimes, about games journalism, is when people talk about the developers "having no choice but to do X" due to consumer pressure and negative feedback. Game companies double down on the stupidity all the bloomin' time. Sometimes, it's like this video, where it's one explosively bad decision... other times, they'll shoot themselves in the foot, then lament they only have five bullets left for their remaining nine toes.

Ghost in the Shell: First Assault Online was the first FPS I started playing with a mouse keyboard, and I was so committed to mastering my shot as much as possible. I loved this game.

the real issue is that a bad update is even capable of ruining the game. a truly resilient game can survive even if the company that owns it turns evil or goes bankrupt. for example, minecraft lets you select the version of the game you want to play and it works in multiplayer and with mods. tf2 has modding support so you can just play on servers that revert bad changes (this isnt just theory, theres actually servers that do this called Castaway). these are just 2 examples but you get the point. if a game can ONLY be played on official servers it's basically on life support from the beginning. not in the sense of about to die, but in the sense of it can never be free from the life support machine that sustains it (the company that made it)

PSO2's New Genesis update was the worst thing to ever happen to a MMO in ages. Not only did it kill the original game entirely but the new one that is lumped onto it like a cancerous tumour is just a horny lootbox simulator that is more bland than white bread. I am still mad about it because I loved playing PSO2 and while I disagreed with it's gacha (lootbox) stuff, it was 100% easy to ignore, while on New Genesis, it's literally the only feature the game has.

5:44 Yup yup yup, can confirm. Was doing my "work experience week" nearly a decade ago with someone who was an avid Galaxies player. Topic of games came up and he told me about Galaxies, how cool and immersive it was, thanks to things like player run economy and such, and couldn't help but mention them killing it by homogenizing it.
