It’s weird being the same age as old people.

My wife was diagnosed with cancer two years into retirement. I expected us to be old and active into our 90s. She died at 72. I’m turning 75 and alone. Her passing has greatly diminished my desire to active things. Don’t wait to do all of the things that you planned to do “some day”.

I would second that - enjoy your 60’s as much as possible, as soon as possible. My husband was 100% healthy, no meds, no issues, extremely active hiker, healthy weight, no smoking, alcohol or drugs, and he got hit with a completely random degenerative brain disorder. No family history, nothing to predict that would ever happen. His life ended 9 months after the first symptoms appeared. He was 59. You can do everything “right” and still have fate pull the rug out from under you. Don’t wait to enjoy life. I can’t retire until I can qualify for Medicare because private insurance is beyond my budget, but if you don’t have to wait, go for it.

My husband died 5 months ago. I retired at 60, I'm about to turn 62. I feel a lot older. Grief does that. I'm revisiting my plan for retirement. It's a lot different alone.

Health really is the biggest factor in retirement, more than money sometimes

Sixty is the old age of youth, however, sixty is the youth of old age.

At 62 I retired and started cycling short distances almost every day.
At 64 I bought my first expensive race/gravelbike and reached 12000 kilometers in one year.
I always wrote songs for bands I was in but at 65 I decided to become lead vocalist in a newly formed band(although my voice is not top notch).
At 67 I used that racebike to go from the Netherlands to the French Pyrenees in 14 days.
At 68 I did my first Ultra cycling challenge, I even biked 375 kilometers in one day, which broke the record set at 30 years old by 110 kilometers.

The future might be short, but there is always something that I havent done yet and new plans to make.

Honestly, I started tearing up watching this and thinking about how little time I have left with my parents. My dad is in his late 60s with early stages of Alzheimers. My mom is also starting to slow down and has trouble with walking. My uncle just survived a heart attack. I wish I had more time with all of them.

Retired 4 years ago. Employer wanted me to stay til 62. At 60 now, I can’t even imagine still hitting the office! I have my joy and peace now.

I retired at 59. The week after I retired, I got a call from the surgeon for long-awaited foot surgery. I went for it, but it restricted my mobility for about a year. I had a few good years of travel. The past 18 months have been filled with caregiving, grief, and managing my mother's estate. You never know which curveballs life will throw at you. I've finally turned the corner and feel at peace. I'm making plans for the future. I turn 65 this year, and while I'm healthy, I will only take a trip that is a direct flight or only has one layover. I just don't feel like dealing with the hassle now. I'm glad I traveled a lot during my working years. My main focus now is spending quality time with people who are important to me, staying healthy, and creating a home environment where I enjoy being. Get the comfy chair, the new running/hiking shoes or pickleball racquet, a sewing machine, a canoe, patio furniture ... whatever will bring you joy and contentment. A quiet, pleasant life is highly underrated.
