Ultra Q | The CREEPY Ultraman Prequel

Ultra Q began as an attempt by one man to apply feature film-level discipline to television. That man was special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya. By the time he turned his attention to the small screen, Tsuburaya had already mastered the art of photographic realism through his work on aviation and war films in the 1930s. He later became the heart of Toho Studios, where his work on the original 1954 Godzilla established the "suitmation" techniques and detailed miniature sets that would define the kaiju genre. But after years of perfecting Toho’s big-screen spectacles, Tsuburaya founded his own production company in 1963 with a specific, stubborn goal: he wanted to produce weekly science fiction without compromising the cinematic proto-blockbuster standards that he had spent his life building. The project was originally titled Unbalance, and early on, it leaned toward the eerie, anthology-style storytelling of American shows like The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits. The focus wasn't on giant brawls, but on strange disruptions of reality and a quiet sense of unease. However, that direction shifted once the Tokyo Broadcasting System committed their funding. TBS executives reviewed the works-in-progress and, sensing the show’s massive potential, pushed for a pivot. Producer Takashi Kakoi noted that while the early episodes were impressive, the audience wanted monster mayhem. He effectively demanded that the show become a "monster-of-the-week" series. As a result, giant creatures became the show's calling card, though the tone thankfully remained rooted in eerie science fiction rather than pivoting into light entertainment. This ambition pushed Japanese television into completely unfamiliar territory. Tsuburaya insisted on shooting on 35mm film—a choice that maintained feature-film quality but immediately strained the budget. To keep things afloat, the team got creative, leveraging Tsuburaya’s deep ties to Toho’s prop department. Instead of building every creature from scratch, they recycled and modified existing suits from recent films. The giant ape Goro was actually the King Kong costume from “King Kong vs. Godzilla”, fitted with a tail and ears to look like a massive monkey, while the walrus Todora was just the "Maguma" suit from the 1962 sci-fi romp, “Gorath”.
