  The Roman promotion system was basically: survive carrying 66 pounds across half of Europe, get promoted… then become responsible for everyone else carrying 66 pounds.

  There were few more levels. Decurion, squad commander, veterans charged with logistics, Fruminarii, topped with Signifer who personally oversaw salary payments. Magister Castrotum, usually former Primus Pillus who was in charge of whole legion camp when Legatus attended to other duties, and Dux, proconsular provintial governer with two or more legions under his command, each of which would have Legatus.

  In the Battle of Cannae in 216 BC, the Roman army deployed a massive, standardized heavy-infantry force organized under the mid-Republican, basic part-time military force. Rather than a full-time professional army of later Imperial Rome, these were citizen-volunteers. Soldier types like Miles or the concept of Marius&apos;s Mules, named after Gaius Marius (c. 157–86 BC), who wouldn&apos;t be born for another 59 years.

  Would always have to be a team effort even with experts leading so many battles are won with the native people on the front line choosing which side benefited them or there family more.... history is wild when you look at the education of the average man....a different kind of tough when you don&apos;t know all of your options in life and believe in something that&apos;s always temporary.

  This is one reason Rome was so impressive but also why it’s sad that so many people think their life is difficult in 2026. <br><br>I don’t see anyone whining about reparations in these geographies either.
