When I worried about playing chops, I impressed other drummers. When I started focusing on playing to a metronome, dynamics/touch, independence, tone of my gear to match the gig, other musicians took note. The importance of the roll of a drummer is well attested, but man we can get in our own way. I happily follow in Steve Jordan's footsteps over many other drummers with a following today. Most songs aren't littered with social media inspired fast linear drum fills. No hate on that stuff, and I am obviously impressed with it and enjoy it as a drummer. I just feel like so many drummers would feel liberated if they really realized how much more important and useful it is to play like Steve. My two cents.

When playing the shuffle it was like there were two snare drums.

Absolutely mesmerizing. Listen to Steve's wisdom. When he does break the hypnotising with a crash, an open hi-hat, or a mini feel, it truly means something!

Even Steve's towel threw itself IN! that towel is so deep in the pocket we'll likely never see it again 😂😂

Best drummers I've ever played with were 99% focused on deep pocket.

This is finally a real drummer that plays what you need to work with other professional players, solid time, and consistency. Not just a bunch stupid fancy chops that just complicate and confuse the music
