  The very first morning I was in Barcelona, some young guy came up from behind me and tried to grab the chain off my neck. He did not succeed but it really tarnished my view of the city for the rest of the trip. It's a shame, because it's a lovely city. I won't be going back; there are plenty of other places to visit.

  Last month, I was in Wales and a member of our group had her wallet stolen in a tiny little town, Castle Combe.  It’s not just the big cities where you need to be aware and careful.  She called to cancel her cards less than an HOUR after it happened, and they’d already racked up thousands of dollars in charges.

  Pickpockets hang out at the water taxis in Venice Italy, and target people getting out of the train station and walking to the water taxis. My wife and I have been there a few times, and were married there in 1992, and we are always on the lookout. Back in 2017, my wife spotted one about to pick another tourist when we were about to get on the taxi. “Pick Pocket” she yelled out, and luckily she scared the thief away.

  Been to Paris, Barcelona, Naples, Florence, Rome, Amsterdam and Venice,  have survived the pickpocketing. Stay safe in your travels everyone!

  back in college with a bunch of friends in the French Quarter in NOLA, had a local tell us to put our wallets in our front pocket... education is key.. thanks for the reminder

  I wear a Rick Steves' money belt under a loose shirt. Never anything in my pockets.

  In Lisbon and Porto our tour guide had chase away pickpockets twice,   they looked like university students

  Barcelona has been the only place I've almost lost my phone. Was walking with my husband, phone in hand and looking at a map - guy tried to run by and steal it. I had a finger on the top of my phone so no one could steal it and it worked. It did get knocked out of my hand (but not grabbed by the guy). All that happened was my case broke, but phone was safe.  I live in London and always have my finger over the top of my phone when I need to use it as it's a worry here.

  After watching a lot of videos on pickpockets and scams, I tested a tactic in Barcelona. <br><br>If your intention is to not enter the attractions and just take photos outside, start your day very early with the locals in the morning rush. Walked around and major places of attractions were deserted with office goers going to work. Scammers and pickpocketers were nowhere to be seen and I managed to explore Barcelona with a peace of mind. Don&apos;t worry some souvenir shops do open at 9am and those vendors are sincere (though haggling a little is recommended)
