Jackie turned to Bobby and asked if he would like to live in one of those. He said, well, maybe so. That was how it started. Bobby had received a dementia diagnosis. The medical guidance was clear: if you are going to move, move soon. The more adjustments that come later, the harder each one becomes. Jackie and Bobby had been living in almost 3,000 square feet and were not using most of it. They started visiting tiny home communities and retailers across their area. They looked at the financial picture, knowing retirement income does not stretch the way it used to. They made a decision. They landed at the Waters community in Nevada, Texas, pond side. The home is 399 square feet, built by Cowtown Cottages. Total with upgrades: $128,000. Bobby's one comment after the first month: I wish we had done this a long time ago. That was his only regret. Jackie gave up the breakfast bar to get the back porch. She gave up some interior square footage to have an entryway, which most tiny homes do not include. She kept a version of the French-door refrigerator she had before, in a counter-depth size that fits the galley kitchen. She skipped the dishwasher to have a hidden trash pull-out. A bamboo noodle board sits over the burners for extra counter space, and a Ninja gets used more than the stove. They did not do a loft. Bobby is 6'4". In models with lofts the door frames were lower and the rooms felt smaller. Without it the bedroom ceiling opens up and there are three hanging rods in the closet instead of the usual one. The back deck is 10x15 and does not count against the square footage. Jackie lights the fireplace in the evenings. The pond is steps away and Bobby fishes whenever he wants. When the grandchildren visit, the rods are already out and waiting. Off the back of the property, a 12x14 she-shed holds Jackie's desk and office setup. A deck connects from the shed down to a lower bar area with stools facing the pond. Four months in, they are still purging. Jackie says that is part of it and expects it to continue. What is not part of the adjustment: Bobby's contentment. Both of them are outside more. They walk. They talk. They socialize. Jackie says it has been a breath of fresh air for both of them, not only for Bobby. They built this to stretch their finances, to simplify, and to give Bobby stability while adjustment is still manageable. A tiny home drove by in a parking lot and started the whole thing. The pond closed the deal.
