  This documentary is absolutely wonderful. This is the real history that our country needs right now to help understand our current struggles. James was a brilliant and beautiful human being. How we treat our fellow man regardless of class or financial stature in life will directly lead to either our species survival or its own destruction.

  My grandmothers’ family grew up here - Hale St. My dad too. Leonard Nimoy lived around the corner from them. I heard stories from my elders about the crab guy and his cart…and the ice guy hauling huge blocks of ice up three levels with ice tongs.

  Although the West End demolition happened before my time, I am a lifelong resident of a suburb of Boston.  I have always wondered why certain sections of the city don’t match the vibrancy and historical architecture of other sections and now I know.  Thank you for the valuable history lesson!

  Public TV WGBH interviewed Leonard Nimoy who was from the West End. His story tells the history of the neighborhood. And Leonard Nimoy was a skilled raconteur.

  I remember the cranes as a small child driving home to Quincy from my grandparents in Medford. Didn’t realize what they were for.

  Loved this documentary. Such a rich history, all but forgotten. I live in Charllestown and like the West End it has such a wonderful history but little by little people are losing touch with its past. Thanks for keeping the memories alive.

  In 1960 I was a student at Northeastern University in the Civil Engineering Cooperative Program. I worked on a survey team out of Brookline tasked to survey the 48 acres of the West End and open up sewers to measure their elevation. I remember locals opening their apartment windows to scream at us, “You’ll never tear down the West End down.”
