  i sobbed so hard at the ending of this movie. the fact that andy dies having spent days being manipulated and abused and separated from his sister, the only good thing he has in his life, feels so harsh and unfair. as much as it&apos;s more &quot;realistic&quot; that laura wouldnt leave it to chance that he would be able to get back up, i was absolutely heartbroken because at the end of the day he&apos;s just a kid struggling to do the right thing for the person he loves the most

  My letterboxd review was this would make a perfect double feature with Lilo and Stitch 2025. To show the true horrors of the foster care system

  This movie made me sob in the theaters because at the beginning, Piper asked Andy something along the lines of “what happens when you die” and Andy says that you just take a plane to heaven to make her laugh, and at the end when Piper was in the car, there was a plane taking off in the sky and OUUUCCCHHHH

  The whole film you don’t see Cathy’s face; Laura has taken down all her pictures, in flashbacks it cuts to Piper’s face instead of Cathy’s. There’s a home video Laura watches but Cathy is wearing a mask.<br>This represents Laura not accepting the death. She is accepting Piper as Cathy. But after Piper escapes, Laura goes to the pool shed and looks at her daughter’s face. We see her face for the first time in the home video and then we cut to Cathy’s actual dead face. Laura has accepted the death. The final stage of grief. Subtle but masterful.

  For me, the line that haunted me was Laura screaming at Piper &quot;Please just let me do this!&quot; The fact that she&apos;s so selfishly demanding that she be allowed to murder her; it&apos;s so casually heartless.

  I still think this movie was more brutal than Talk to Me. We find out Andy was abused before he&apos;s killed off, Piper finds out the father she loved was abusive and her brother who cared for her is now dead, and &quot;Oliver&quot; is going to need more than therapy and dental as his stomach and esophagus has to be very torn up.

  I think for me a standout of the film was the depiction of the two faced nature of abusers. The heartbreaking aspect is that they are capable of love and care they just choose not to give that to their chosen victim. &nbsp;<br>Sometimes they&apos;re very good at picking out who has been abused before and singling them out. The tragedy of Andy is his second abuser knowing what he went through and perpetuating that cycle to break him. <br>I think Laura also justified her actions towards him becsuse she&apos;d written him off for what he&apos;d done as a child. I think her character is very much representative of how dismissive care systems can be when you screw up once. Andy&apos;s childhood mistake haunted the way the systems viewed him.

  so fun fact pools are required to have fences around them in australia, so cathy likely wouldn’t have drowned if it was up to regulation (also further &nbsp;illustrates the negligent background/safety checks of the foster care system)

  The first thing I thought when I saw the pool was &quot;What kind of negligent mother can afford a home with a pool and doesn&apos;t properly fence it for her blind child?&quot;<br>Her grief is insane, her treatment and discarding of others is insane. But the thing that pissed me off the most was this. You wouldn&apos;t have had to experience this loss in the first place if you had just been a better mother who thought more about the implications of your daughters disability.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7UIlbJT2fE&amp;t=1277">21:17</a> i don&apos;t think Piper necessarily ignored their &quot;grapefruit&quot; pact i think she just didn&apos;t trust it anymore. earlier in the movie during their dad&apos;s funeral she asks Andy how their dad looks and Andy says he looks good even though he&apos;s not actually looking at him. Piper says &quot;grapefruit&quot; and Andy just repeats himself. Laura notices this, and in the next moment when she&apos;s trying to get Andy to say goodbye to his dad she mentions that he didn&apos;t even look at the body. Piper then gets upset at Andy because he lied to her even after she said &quot;grapefruit&quot;. i think Laura did this on purpose to plant the idea in Piper&apos;s mind that Andy isn&apos;t trustworthy. that plus her revealing Andy used to get hit by their dad and even hit Piper once was all orchestrated by Laura so that when Andy tries to convince Piper he didn&apos;t hit her the night before by saying &quot;grapefruit&quot;, she doesn&apos;t believe him. because she now knows he still lies even when he says it and she thinks she just heard him hit Laura

  Gotta say HUGE props to Jonah Wren Phillips as Oli/Connor, easily one of the most creepy/disturbing kid performances in horror movie history for me. There are moments from him that, to put it mildly, I’m never going to forget. I hope he has free therapy for life after the scenes he was put through though, I don’t have any idea how anyone could manage doing what he did at only 12 years old 😬
