  That was actually the first energetic I ever made, when I was about 10yr old. Nobody showed me how and I didn&apos;t realize it was even that simple, what I did was I heated a saturated iodine tincture (it was literally a pile of crystals in a little rubbing alcohol) in one container, and some household ammonia in a larger container. I had some IV tubing, I guess I got from when I got my tonsils out, had that held into a hole in the lids of the containers with puddy, then I had two funnels over a third container one would a coffee filter much like a normal filtration, the other one upside down over the top of the first with the IV tubing coming in through the hole. Somewhere I got it in my head that the two had to react in the gas state and I thought I had the condensed the ammonia, also my iodine was contaminated from the potassium salt I got it from so that helps separate that as well. <br> &nbsp; Anyway I ended up with a coffee filter full of large damp crystal like chunks of this stuff. &nbsp;<br> &nbsp;I spread it out on a steal plate to dry, and as it dried those Crystal like chunks would spontaneously explode causing this 10 lb steel plate to hop!!!!<br> That scares the heck out of me thinking how big it would be if that whole fist size lot went off at once!!<br> &nbsp; So I washed it down the drain, I didn&apos;t realize those chunks wouldn&apos;t dissolve. Later that night you could hear popping and banging from the pipes and sewer system and the drain pipes in the house were shaking with purple smoke coming out of the drain.<br> &nbsp;That scared both my parents and my neighbors! I never told them what I did.<br> &nbsp; That&apos;s what I learned how sensitive this stuff was! it will literally explode from a crystal cracking as it dries!<br> &nbsp; I haven&apos;t made any since(45yr) but I&apos;m considering it now after seeing it&apos;s effects on mosquitoes😅

  I made it using a strong elemental iodine solution in water, dropped through 28% NH4OH. &nbsp;The precipitate is the product. I washed it three times with water, then let it dry. &nbsp;My brother walked by, creating air current which set it off.

  Soo... as an eager young 1st year chem student, I decided that I needed to make NI3 myself.<br><br>Sensibly, I did this on some concrete outside.<br><br>Needless to say, once it dried it exploded with a satisfying pop. When I thought that everything had popped, I went back inside. A little later, I heard a &quot;POP&quot; from outside... On investigation, I found several legs of a cockroach....

  Our standard school prank was off the shelf ammonia mixed with iodine powder. &nbsp;After 3 days, wash and store the crystal residue in IPA. Sprinkle the slurry around the floor outside the staff-room, the alcohol evaporates; then watch from a safe distance.

  Was such a fun chemical to play and surprise with. &nbsp;I used to use tincture of iodine and household ammonia. &nbsp;Then decant after settling, coat pen ends or pencil eraser end and cover with some crepe paper. &nbsp;toss it next to other students to freak out when teacher left room..... fun stuff.

  I&apos;ve heard that nitrogen trichloride is less stable, but it&apos;s so dangerous that it can detonate while wet, or even spontaneously while drying out.
