Brother this video took me maybe 2.5 hours to watch with constant rewinding. I took so many notes. Thank you for making this video. Believe me I’ve seen videos on YouTube that are nowhere near as layman as yours. You really helped this nerd man.

Bro! I hesitated when I saw 32 mins but half way in I got more things clarified in such a simple, practical and concise way than most other videos and articles. Great job!

Great video and lots of good info. The three biggest mistakes for the people who are new to NAS are: 1) underestimating how important a UPS is, it should be part of the NAS budget and should be purchased together with the NAS, this is especially important if power grid is unreliable. 2) underestimating how expensive this hobby is, especially when 3-2-1 backup strategy is implemented correctly for large amounts of data. 3) overlooking the network bottleneck, since most modern NAS comes with at least 2.5 GbE port, the speed of data transfer is limited by the switch. Although, for most home users, 1GbE is more than enough for data storage and light streaming.

Not sure why this popped up in my algorithm. I’ve never heard of it and haven’t really kept up with tech lately. But I did the math and I’m paying about $15 a month for Google unlimited cloud storage, and my wife pays $10 for 2tb of iCloud. That’s around $300 a year. We should definitely look into one of these.

Watching 3 weeks after release of this video, Synology has drop their demand to use only their brand of drives in the new units. You can now pick and choose between different brand drives to populate a new Synology NAS.

Lmao I’m here because of the scenario in the opening bit. Only difference is I already have the $99/yr 2TB and I now have to jump to the 5TB but don’t want to pay $250/yr

I built to nas to get off the cloud, but underestimated the IT management and technical skills needed to manage security etc. gave up and adopted Mac mini as a home server with a simple hdd enclosure. Rather than manage the nas I now focus on applications to use like immich.
