They call them "barrier" islands for a reason. A barrier does not exist to protect itself. I live less than a mile from Manasota Beach. While the key got wiped out by the hurricanes, those of us on the mainland, mere feet away from the sdtorm's landfall, lost a few roof tiles, and maybe a window or two. Some ground floor water intrusion and a few trees. No residence was destroyed. The "barrier" worked great for us because it's a good barrier! The wealthy will always look for a pl;ace to show off their wealth without regard to nature, their fellow man, or anything else. Insulation is the go-to play for the rich.

I am a strong proponent of private property. I feel sorry for the people losing their homes. However in no way should their neighbors and fellow citizens be obligated to repair their roads and construct sea walls to save structures which were doomed to fail. The rising tides are laying claim to homes far up the east coast and there will in the coming years be no more seaside condos and mansions.
