  For the record, many artists use knockoff and budget guitars for both live performances and recording in the studios, even if they are sometimes seen with a high-priced flashy guitar during some live shows.<br>Jack White (The White Stripes): Known for championing cheap gear. He famously recorded and toured with a 1960s Airline Resoglass (purchased for a fraction of its modern value at the time) and a Kay Hollowbody. He preferred them for their unrefined, raw tone.Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine): He recorded many of his iconic solos using a $50 Kay ST-120 (bought with a combo amp) and a 1960s Japanese &quot;hunk of junk&quot; pawnshop guitar that he purchased for just $40.Prince: Despite owning some of the most elaborate custom guitars ever made, Prince&apos;s go-to instrument for recording was a Hohner Telecaster copy—a $30 budget model he famously purchased at a gas station in the late 1970s.Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day): Even with major label budgets, Green Day’s frontman famously relied on an inexpensive Fernandes Stratocaster copy (often referred to as &quot;Blue&quot;) for years.Elliott Smith: The indie-rock icon heavily utilized a budget Yamaha FG-180 (a classic red label acoustic guitar) for the majority of his intimate, acclaimed studio recordings. 1. Tom DeLonge (Blink-182)Before getting his famous Fender and Gibson signature models, Tom DeLonge tracked Blink-182&apos;s earliest records—including Flyswatter, Buddha, and their breakout debut Cheshire Cat—using a completely stock 1990s Squier Stratocaster. He famously left all three stock single-coil pickups intact and recorded almost exclusively in position 4 (blending the stock neck and middle pickups). This configuration gave those early pop-punk tracks their distinct, bright, and slightly hollow twang.2. Phil Collen (Def Leppard)Def Leppard is known for spending millions on pristine, highly engineered studio production. However, during the tracking of their album Diamond Star Halos, lead guitarist Phil Collen tracked significant portions of the record using completely stock Squier guitars right out of the box. He praised their tuning stability and tone, proving that affordable manufacturing can hold up under rigorous studio scrutiny.3. Mike Rutherford (Genesis)Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mike Rutherford shocked the gear community when he went on a massive arena tour with Genesis using $200 stock Squier Bullet Strats purchased from a local music shop. While he used them primarily live, he kept them completely stock because he loved the raw response of the pickups and the lightweight bodies.4. Jack Pearson (The Allman Brothers Band)Widely regarded as a &quot;guitarist&apos;s guitarist,&quot; Jack Pearson famously plays bone-stock Squier Stratocasters both live and in the studio. Despite having access to incredibly valuable vintage instruments, he swears by the resonance, tight low end, and singing highs of untouched Squier hardware.5. Mac DeMarcoThe indie-pop icon tracked major portions of his guitar parts using an unmodified, beat-up 1992 Squier Stratocaster. The lo-fi, jangle-pop chorus sounds that define his signature style were captured perfectly by the cheap, aged stock single-coils of that era.<br>One of my favorite guitars was an old 1990s Peavey guitar that had a short in the volume knob. If you placed it just right between 9 and 10, you&apos;d get a neat &quot;bandpass&quot; sound. I use a Squier guitar and still stand by them as a &quot;Fender&quot; alternative with stock hardware, but I&quot;ve made sure I did a full set up and polish on things like the frets, fretboard, neck adjustments, truss rod adjustments, etc. For Acoustic, I use a 2016 Rogue acoustic/electric (also considered a budget model compared to Ovation, Martin, and Gibson models). I can also use BlueCat Re-Guitar to emulate other pickup tones when I want a fat, high-midrange humbucker tone or different acoustic models. The power is in the player, not the guitar!
