I'm indonesian, currently living in coastal town of kudus. I still remember how this place used to have dense mangrove forest in the 90s. Then people cut them down and turn it into large scale aquafarm, mostly to grow milkfish and prawns. Stripping the place of its natural defense. The overuse of groundwater don't help either

Life can be incredibly hard. Here I am lamenting losing a job due to layoff and having to start another one I still like for few hundreds euros less per month. Sitting in a comfortable living room while others have water all over their house. This was a good philosophy lesson. I must appreciate what I have. What we have in the West is not hardship but mental disease with the desire to need more ... more more ... more more ...

This documentary made me incredibly sad. Sad for the mother who lost her son and husband and living alone. The water is there yes, always but the loss + the water and the hardship to earn a living. Salute to her!

it's reasonable that it is hard to leave their mother land where they have spent their whole life with. after watching, i i really look up them, not only for their shortage and difficult life sinking in water, but also for their perseverence, resilience, and strong will. i can't imagine how can i live in such place in a long time. hope that the government or social institutions will help them have a better life.:face-purple-crying:

I feel incredibly bad for all these sweet people. They are so tough. So strong. If I had the money, I would give what was needed, to their community, to help keep raising their houses, mending walkways, or start over on the mainland. Whatever they needed and wished for. This is so devastating to watch. My heart and prayers go out to them all ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I’m Malaysian and we and Indonesia are far from what we call friendly neighbors on most topics. Whenever I see these kind of videos I do wonder what if I was in their shoes …

Needless to say, I feel so bad complaining about my job, about the awful commute to work, about everything really

Another amazing documentary DW

I believe the government should help these vulnerable people. They're a small community that require urgent attention. Praying that they can get the help they truly need.

It can be very hard to leave a home/area with family lineage even in these conditions with adapting ways of life. These stories can be relatable across the world, thank you for documenting them.
