The flashbacks to Earth are his memories returning bit by bit.

He gave him gravity. He gave him oxygen. He gave him his life back. A happy life. A fulfilled life.

Sandra Huller was outstanding at portraying the ultimate pragmatist who was internally struggling with certain decisions. Not that she’d ever let that struggle keep her from making the hard (but correct) choice. Hope she gets nominated for a supporting actor award.

Pretty sure he was remembering gradually all through the movie, remembering each flashback as they happened, because his actions and words on the whiteboard reflected that. At the end it hits him—why he had no memory of training for the mission or agreeing to go on it. The one he found to be brave for, in the end, was Rocky.

Been told the book explains his muscles were electrically stimulated. So, although he was a little weak, his muscles hadn't atrophied.

20:25 . “Why did he live and they died?”

When they were discussing the mission crew being in induced comas for most of the mission, Stratt herself mentioned that nothing about the mission is safe.

In the book, iirc this was the first time they had tried inducing comas for a very long time. The need to do so was because Soviet tests on astronaut confinement for long stretches of time resulted in homicidal tendencies. Stratt did not want the three-man crew unaliving each other before they even reached Tau Ceti.

Also in the book, ALL mission crew needed a rare coma-compatible gene: one present only in 1 out of 7000 people. This gene gave the candidates a better chance of surviving the coma; it did not guarantee they would live.

It would also turn out that Grace possessed that rare gene, which is why Stratt kept him close on the entire project, unbeknownst to him. They could not send more than 3 crew members due to logistical reasons ( food, air, space on the Hail Mary ). Grace was Stratt’s own Hail Mary; when the two scientists got blown up in the astrophage accident, there was one more willing volunteer. But the mission was on a critical schedule and a short launch window; they simply did not have time to train a new scientist, while Grace had already been thoroughly trained for the entire mission.

In the book, it is hinted that Yáo and Ilyukhina perished due to a malfunction in the feeding tubes. Author Weir is playing coy about the real reason, saving it for a possible sequel to this film.

The biodome that the Eridians made for Grace was named Graceland by a fan. Andy Weir liked it so much he made it canon!

The karaoke scene was not planned. Gosling heard Sandra singing and thought it would be great if they could find a way for her to sing in the movie. She chose the song.

Gosling wanted this to be the "ET" for his kid's generation. Real sets, no green screens, Rocky is a puppet most of the time and Gosling does all the wire work. Marking of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeUyot032b0&t=489s
