We need to add "Chris talks about the appalachian mountains" to the drinking game

Regarding the Amish, I went out to a Christian writers' convention when I was in school, and it's absolutely nuts how many romance novels about the Amish there are. (The tongue in cheek term is "bonnet-rippers.")

It's not just chocolate. Both Lloyds and Barclays, two of the UK's biggest banks, were founded by Quakers.

Please do "In Defense of Puritanism" By Atun-Shei. He said he considers it one of his best videos. He talks about the Diggers origin in England.

I absolutely love your extensive knowledge of the United Methodist Church. I love that its your example for a lot of things and it gets mentioned a lot. As a proud life-long United Methodist, I love that you're giving my denomination some love here.

I am Roman Catholic and have enjoyed the original content and your reaction for added context. I grew up learning that there are Catholics and Protestants. Didn’t fully realize the nuances and aspects of the different faiths within Protestantism (Christianity).

I think you should watch extra history’s early Christian schisms series- I think you’d find it fascinating and a good couplet to this series

My ancestors were mennonites and they originated in the Netherlands. When a catholic came to power and started pirsecuting them they fled to the polish lithuanian commonwealth on the vistula delta near danzig. They lived their for a couple centuries and their Dutch merged with the German and Polish languages to become low german, or plautdeutsch. When prussia conquered that area they removed our military exemptions and so we fled to the russian empire near what is today zaporizcha. They lived their until 1876 when russia removed our military exemptions and then Canada gave us land in Manitoba on what they called the east reserve. We have lived here since then. Most of us are indistinguishable from the other residents of manitoba other than our religion.

It should be noted that the Puritans who moved to America (the Pilgrims) weren't necessarily looking for "religious freedom" in the same way we might think of it today. They were looking to establish their own theocratic state, their own Jerusalem. Roger Williams (who would later found Rhode Island) was expelled from the Massachusetts Bay colony because he believed in things like separation of church and state and, like, treating Indians like people. The Puritans wanted to separate from the Church of England so they could create their own theocracy.

I feel like that's an important distinction to make. They were escaping persecution, yes, but they had the full intention of persecuting others. A more modern example would be something closer to the Mormons, who founded Utah as their own territory, where their beliefs were law and the law was their beliefs. Obviously I'm not saying Mormons persecute people, just drawing a parallel.

Roger Williams was a firm believer in a separate church and state. His writings inspired Jefferson’s stance on the matter.
