  My father loved you. He had a wonderful garden. A cruel illness took him 11 years ago, but I still miss him talking about his garden. I watch this with tears in my eyes for he would have enjoyed this. Thanks. :)

  I must confess that I allow dandelions to grow as they provide a valuable source of nectar to pollinators in the early spring. I just remove the seed heads, carefully, to prevent them spreading. The young leaves are good in salads too! I also grow Birds Foot Trefoil, another “weed”  in pots. It makes for a pretty, repeat flowering, trailing plant that the bees also love. Not all weeds are bad!

  I've been rediscovering my garden since autumn 2025. I have removed all the fencing on the side garden which had been there for 20+ years. It served no useful purpose other than being a climbing frame for bindweed and invasive ivy. I've cut back perennial shrubs hard to reinvigorate them, dug out over 200 brambles and their roots and chased miles of bindweed roots underneath the weed suppressing membrane. This past week I have cleared a field of dandelions from the rockery and the postage stamp space that used to be a "lawn" and was mainly weeds and moss, has been expanded and the borders pushed back to a more manageable width. I have still to work on the newly defined lawn area as I had to dig out a network of inch thick roots so everything needs levelling. The bark mulch for the borders arrives tomorrow! For context, I'm a widowed pensioner, female, and this is the first time I've attempted such a huge project on my own.

  Hi there, I am a South African fan, you were the main reason I started gardening, had a landscaping business in Cape Town area for 22 years!  I now live on the farm in the southern Cape, where I grew up and like my father, do everything organically…this is a thank you for all your advice and most of all, my love of gardening!❤ I even travelled to the Chelsea Flower Show in 2004 to see the beautiful show gardens!

  When I had an allotment, I was a firm believer in putting cardboard under the mulch. I would raid the recycling bins for enough. The cardboard will rot away over a season and leave a fairly sterile soil underneath. I would make holes to plant through the cardboard. Courgettes seemed to love this and even potatoes worked.

  All great if you're fit and able..... I was a top notch gardener but I can no longer do this due to ill health, and believe me you can no longer find people who want to do this hard graft anymore.

  I encourage natural weed in my lawn, daisies,clover, dandelion etc for the bees and other pollinators..
