My pro tip for visiting Malaysia coming from a local: please take note of two things which are the school holidays and major holidays schedule, and when the monsoon seasons are. During major holidays, especially religious holidays, there is a huge exodus of people from Kuala Lumpur and other places are being visited at the same time, so buses, planes, and even trains would be very busy but stay away from driving during this time because the highways can get clogged up in nanoseconds during peak days.

Of course, with the Grab app, you can use it for food delivery, as well. Many smaller restaurants in the area and even stalls participate, so if you are wiped out from a long travel period, you can order something local if you are brave enough to try it. Back to the question of alcohol, many chain shops and convenience stores do sell them (but not all; notably, the Family Mart chain has abolished the sale of alcohol since last year, so you won't find any there; many 7-Elevens and KK Marts do sell them, as well as most big supermarkets and grocery chains like 99 Speedmart which is pretty much everywhere).

Interestingly, one of the lingering legacies of British rule is that we love baked beans for some reason and you can find baked beans in tomato sauce in tins pretty much in every grocery store. Another thing of note is that Malaysia uses exactly the same power sockets and plugs as the British ones, so if you happen to be from the UK or Ireland and you absolutely can't live without your favorite toaster, feel free to bring it. Another somewhat useless trivia about Malaysia is that it is the only federal state in Southeast Asia; the closest countries with federal systems to Malaysia are Australia and India.

Spent 2.5 weeks in Malaysia 2025 as part of a 3month SE Asia tour, and I have to say it was my fav country. My wife's was Thailand, however 1 thing we agree upon, KL was our favourite city in the entire region

64 Year old travelling nut here, off to Malaysia in January and then onto Vietnam. These are the types of videos I love, good solid advice. On the initial viewing I have jotted down 3 points/advice that are of use to me and what I will do, will look over this video again late to make sure I never missed anything. I am just of now to see if you have done anything on Vietnam
Thanks Josh

Kuala Lumpur has changed so much since the last time I visited. I hardly recognise the streets. The comprehensive public transports which were unknown then like Mass Rapid transport, the LRT, Monorail, buses, Grab(KL uber) & KLIA Ekspress which takes you to the KL international airport from the KL central station. At the station, there is a shopping mall. This development is a pleasant surprise. Not everyone needs a car like it used to be to move around. Public transport is relatively cheap .

Spent 5 days in KL, absolutely loved it. Can see this country taking over other western countries. It’s so cheap eg food, community is so helpful/friendly and yes Grab is cheap too. Shall be returning back!

Tips for booking buses online:
You might not notice it, but the fine print may have mentioned that passengers need to confirm with the bus companies in advance to make sure the bus is departing on time. It happened to me once that when I called to confirm a day before my trip, I was asked to choose another time because the bus wasn't going to depart as scheduled. You can contact them by calling them or via WhatsApp.
Hope they'll fix this and make it convenient for the passengers soon tho
