God, these films of old Davis Cup matches are fascinating and superb . These were the ‘ good old days ‘ when the Davis Cup was king . Not like now when the format is an abomination and the competition has been ruined by player power and , naturally money as in so many other sports . This particular year featured Sedgman and McGregor , all time great doubles pair , who won the doubles calendar Grand Slam in 1951 . Sedgman was a great volleyer particularly on the backhand wing . For the Americans Trabert went on to be a great singles player . He was also blessed with a great attacking backhand unlike so many players of that era who relied on a sliced backhand - frequently easy meat for the volleyers . Trabert’s backhand grip was considered extreme at the time . Note the sportsmanship of the players - a different world .
