Alabama’s city boosters are not going to love this video.
Today we are counting down 12 Alabama towns carrying some of the roughest reputations in the state, and they earned those reputations for completely different reasons.
One is dealing with the downside of becoming one of Alabama’s biggest tourism destinations. Another has lost residents while nearly three in ten people live below the poverty line. One city has spent decades dealing with an environmental contamination story tied to industrial history. Another had a water system deteriorate so badly that a court-appointed receiver was brought in after the utility defaulted on tens of millions of dollars in debt.
And #3 might start the biggest argument.
It is one of Alabama’s biggest success stories. People are moving there by the thousands. Companies keep investing. New homes keep appearing. Yet some longtime residents increasingly complain that the growth, traffic, development, and rising housing costs are changing the city they once knew.
