  The actual hack is yes, get fit for irons, driver, putter and maybe woods, but get a printout of your results. Dont buy on the spot. Unfortunately you will pay far more buying from the fitter. Take note of lie or loft adjustments, the shafts that work best for you, and what type of putter fits your stroke. I was fit into Mizuno HM Pros with MMT s 85G shafts. What I did was ordered Maltby TS3 forged heads from golfworks and had them adjusted for lie and loft according to my fitting as its a service they offer. Then for shafts, I found a set of "Pulled" new MMT 80gs taper for $125 for 7 5-g on proclubs mint. I learned how to assemble them and built them to spec and d3 like my fitting. Very easy. I was priced $1890 for the Mizunos and MMT combo. The Maltby TS3 with the MMT shafts I built to spec cost me $560 total fully built to fitting spec. This set holds it own or surpasses the HM pros.  Or after fitting find a shaft that has a similar flex profile or EIN and weight. For Driver, Old Stock shafts that are new and you can get a non OEM Haz Black for $60 now, all sorts of great deals on discontinued shafts which often are the same with new paintjobs. Rogue 130msi is $60 new. These were $300 shafts. I was fit for a ventus 60 s black velocore and the Cobra Max K. Total $699. I bought the Cobra Max K Head Only for $220 mint and Accra Concept 1 65s shaft for $65 new from proclubs again ($499 msrp at a time) that has the same low launch spin profile as the ventus black. Same results as my fitting after building. Also learned I have a very minor arc and was fit into an expensive club I loved and a LAB but it was a wideblade single bend I matched up with best tied with a Lab. I found a Bettinardi BB28 in good condition on Callaway Preowned for $165 and it was like new. Eventually you learn what works for you and if you take up the option of building, or ordering from golfworks, or buying whatever clubs you like and having them bent to loft and lie and you will save thousands and endless options. So The fitting was crucial, but I took that info and built my whole bag for under the cost of just the irons from the fitter and ended up with the same results. New Old Stock is your friend.
