Mark having sores etc towards the end is probably from 1. Not being able to wash or clean clothes properly on a regular basis 2. Doing a load of work in a pressure suit, which can rub and have hot spots, over an extended period of time 3. Poor nutrition affecting skin health/repair.

Not from radiation from the RTG - it's reasonably safe unless it breaks/leaks in which case it's all over.

Calling somebody a "steely-eyed missile man" is a compliment of the highest order given to those who demonstrate exceptional calm and problem solving skills in rocketry. It goes back to the earliest days of the space program as told by Tom Wolf in "The Right Stuff".

The amazing thing about this movie is that everyone is hyper-competent. Everyone is always making the best possible choices. It's Team Nasa vs Mars.

Apollo 13 inserted fictional scenes of stress between the astronauts because they feared the audience was ignorant enough overall that the idea of highly trained professionals dealing with life and death emergencies professionally would make them feel that there was no tension, no risk. I personally like competence in my fiction.

@6:28 Actually, they DID have a doctor on the mission. That's Sebastian Stan's character. However, you're correct in that all crew members would be taught some emergency aid procedures.

I love how he carries a lot of the movie as a monologue. Not every actor could have done that, even with the great writing, and kept you engaged the whole time.

I'm sure there is at least one person who spent there entire working life working on the Voyager missions. From the mid-seventies to two thousand twenty five. 50 years. What a lifetimes work that would be.

The Martian gives me the same feeling watching Star Trek does, watching competent people do their jobs well is the best shit

The great film you want to see now, that explains a bunch of the references made in the film, is THE RIGHT STUFF.
