  Lifelong American here. Most of us Americans don&apos;t understand gum under tables or benches. It&apos;s gross and disrespectful. I have never done it and haven&apos;t seen anyone stick their gum anywhere since probably High School. I think it&apos;s mostly a laziness and teenager thing. They are done with the gum and don&apos;t feel like finding the correct place to get rid of it, so they just stick it under something.

  About the chewing gun thing - yes, the gum spots are things from the past that we totally used to do. But trust me, it&apos;s not a usual thing. And also, gum under the table is just a practice of people who don&apos;t have much culture or manners. It&apos;s not a normal thing.

  The &quot;so-so&quot; hand gesture is imitating a scale rocking back and forth. From heavy to light, meaning neither good nor bad. So-so.

  Ick - leaving gum places isn&apos;t considered &quot;ok&quot; by most Americans - it&apos;s definitely bad manners! If my kid did that, they would be in so much trouble. You&apos;re definitely supposed to put the gum in a wrapper and throw it away here too!!!! And, as someone from the southern US, the key to a good southern accent is to add a diphthong (double vowel) where it doesn&apos;t belong! (Or to really emphasize one that should be there.) For example, &quot;well&quot; might become &quot;weh-ell&quot; or &quot;wey-ell&quot;.

  In many western cultures, there is no bowing, BUT, it is very common to nod the head when passing someone on the street as a sign of acknowledgement and respect. Which is derived/a remnant from historical eras where bowing was a customary greeting.
