  Komeda is usually my go-to place. Their egg sando–tomato sauce pizza fusion is incredibly filling. And I also love their black coffee.

  I discovered Komeda’s on my last trip and became slightly obsessed. You really can’t go wrong with Komeda’s. But I do always try to check out local / independent cafe’s and kissa’s. They can be daunting at first if you’re a tourist who doesn’t know a lick of Japanese. But the vibes are always cool, and sometimes you might even get some good banter with the owners.

  I remember reading through guide books for my first trip in 1997.  Either Fodor's or Frommer's (maybe both) recommended the morning set in a coffee shop.  That's it.  It's like there's nothing else to eat for breakfast back then.  We're so educated now!

  I found small bakeries to have great options in both Kyoto &amp; Tokyo, as the hotel breakfast prices were quite pricey.<br>The pastries and coffee in Japan are top shelf.

  Heavy on the train stations are shopping malls, entering one of those you get hit with a strong bakery smell (often due to Vie de France)

  We just spent 3 weeks in Japan. At every city we stayed, we&apos;d find a supermarket and buy yogurt, fruit, veg, baked goods, and cold coffee to keep in our hotel fridge. This kept us healthier too, and we still enjoyed restaurant meals once or twice a day.

  Matsuya is my #1 for japanese breakfasts, although I love Komeda&apos;s Coffee. &nbsp;I can walk there from the hotel, eat, and be back in my room in less than 20 minutes, usually! &nbsp;It&apos;s sooo good.

  Nakau salmon breakfast set is a very good option and they opens super early. Indeed the food pops up in less than a minute that made me wonder if that’s really my order. Really a hidden gem.
