One in six Swiss homes is under threat from natural hazards, with more than $1 billion spent each year trying to protect them. As climate change accelerates, is that a sustainable strategy or a losing battle? Tell us what you think 👇

It's not about taming, it's about living in harmony with nature.

Grateful to the people who made this video possible. I’ve been wondering how these communities have been doing. It’s good to see and hear about this beautiful place. Thank you all! You are adapting in the sensible ways that you can.

In Switzerland, there's still a strong trust in science and in expertise. This was crucial in the evacuation of Blatten, for example. It does not always save lives or livelihoods, but there's the will to learn, to mend and to adapt. This spirit will keep the Alps inhabited.

Every glacier has cravasses which can fill with 0 degree C meltwater which is not warm enough to melt its way out; it must await a fracture in the ice to escape. But enough depth of water can also split the ice by its pressure, even lifting some ice off the rock. Such pressure fracturing can release its trapped water and allow a cascade of nearby water-filed cravasses, plus blocks of now lubricated ice. No visible glacial lake is required for meltwater to be stored in glacial ice, ready to fall.

Oh, my! This made us realized that what had happened in Nepal has been happening in other places even long ago, because of the melting glaciers caused by global warming. 🥺

Well, the Alps are an active mountain area and still growing and moving. There is always a risk of whole mountainsides coming down.
