  The first time I listened to this, I was paralyzed. My big brother was shot down just 15 meters away from me on our sidewalk when I was 6 years old, exactly when I was running inside to get water for us. You cannot escape that; it is forever a demon glued to your back, whispering, &apos;Get them.&apos; I didn&apos;t get them, but for 10 years, I plotted to do it.<br>Hearing this song at 16 was truly the first step to letting it go. I can never get over it, but all of the hatred and violence that moment put inside me were washed away.<br>I am an atheist and 29 years old today, and I thank the Lord for inspiring this man to bring this cleansing poem to me. <br> <br>RIP Ricardo, forever my homie and beloved brother, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.<br>I&apos;ll forever sing about you.

  That incident with the elderly woman at the end actually happened to Kendrick after the death of his friend when he was young. He says the incident changed his life and made him focus more on music as an escape until he finally blew up from it. The voice was the late Maya Angelou.
