Everyone who is half educated in prospecting knows certain metals often travel together. Meaning murcery and silica in this altered rock screams precious metals. The average may be a gram our two but the source veins are much higher. Small scale mining is the answer. Large companies can profit from grams because they take the low grade and the high grade veins come with it. They only talk about gold but other metals travel with it. Do it adds up to profitability

As soon as the golds value goes up to the point it's worth mining it again. Someone will, then the walue goes down. Gold is one of the most plentiful metal on the planet. Its just expensive to mine.
