  These property owners get snarky and rude if you set foot on their "private beaches,"  but usually want public money to rescue their butts when the worst case comes calling.

  I was born in SoCal in 1941and the problem has existed since I can remember.  Building on bluffs that have been eroding for years has been a silly endeavor and the owners  had to be prepared for erosion or didn't do their homework.  As usual people will blame  city or state  governments or someone other than themselves for making poor choices and just do not want to understand the concept of taking responsibility for their choices.  The courts should not bend.

  Most of those cliff side mansions are devoid of humans most of the time. How do I know? Because I used to live in them…<br>The homes are filled with expensive furniture and valuable art…the double garages stuffed with vintage cars, motorcycles, and toys. <br>The Owners are gone most of the day and take extensive vacations multiple times a year.

  I’ve lived in Solana Beach my entire life and witnessed tremendous change, including a time when segregation kept many people from buying homes near the beach.<br><br>When I was young, I asked my dad, “Why can’t we live closer to the beach?” Looking toward the ocean, he said, “You see that beautiful Pacific Ocean? Someday it will take it. You can never win against the Pacific Ocean.”<br><br>Those words have stayed with me. I come from that history, and I’ve seen how certain people were allowed to buy beautiful, expensive homes on the hills above the beach. The Pacific is powerful, and nature will ultimately have its way. I don’t believe everyone else should automatically be responsible for protecting private homes built too close to the ocean.

  I was a bricklayer in San Diego and worked on a house on the south end of La Jolla shores way up on the top of the cliffs at that time the house was on a dead end road and the back of the house faced the ths cliff and the porch was less than 20 ft from the cliff, the lady was close to 90yrs old and born and raised in that house. She showed us pistures whenshe was a little girl and on was taken from the cliff back to the house, There was a pine tree at the edge of the sidewalk by the porch, the tree in 1979 wasnt 20 ft from the cliff and looked like 80ft from the old picture. She said that the insurance recently cancelled her policy because of the errosion, the soil engineers said she`d have maybe 15yrs before it was condemend, We`d have our lunch break with her all week her stories were intriguing, she had us open the old seperate garage to show us a 1929 Caddy with trailer, said her dad smuggled liquor during the depression, I google earth where the house was and its gone its now, there seemsto be a lookout point and a walk way which was not there then. The cliff traveled 50 ft or so from 1890+ till the property was approprieated.

  Nature&apos;s march is inexorable. It has no respect for multimillion-dollar houses. Get a grip, owners, instead of griping. You are living on a cliff. And that sort of real estate comes with some serious downsides. Down being the operative word here.

  My brother lives in SoCal. I never understood why the state let people build houses so close to the edge of the ocean. How are these houses being insured? I also wonder why people build homes near any flood plains along rivers. Obviously at some point the house is going to flood.

  When the cliffside collapses, and the building above falls, who is responsible to pull out and dispose of the concrete, wood, and housing detritus? &nbsp;What is necessary is a bond posted by the landowner that covers all probable loss. &nbsp;They can pledge assets, rather than just walk away. &nbsp;To protect the public and the municipality, I see no other way than bonding. &nbsp;If not, the people are stuck with a multimillion dollar clean up ticket. &nbsp;Can you cover this point?
