Regarding my comment at 6:19, I'm referring to the game's story pacing. The ending is phenomenal, but I hated the sense of progression, or lack thereof, in RDR.

Also, I've been made aware several times now that it's a Maxim gun not a Gatlin.

There's also another reason why Guarma is important for the story: it seals Arthur's fate. For those unaware, Tuberculosis is not an automatic death sentence. Roughly 25% of people alive have dormant Tuberculosis. If you live a healthy life, you don't get too sick, and you live in relatively dry areas, your likelihood of getting active TB is much lower. Arthur probably gets active TB after becoming septic in chapter three. But due to his fairly healthy and active lifestyle his body was able to fight it off. Then he goes to Guarma where he spends several weeks being wet and malnourished on a tropical island. His immune system which was already weaker than normal and was already fighting off his illness takes a massive beating on Guarma. And as a result, it is no longer able to hold off the illness that will ravage Arthur's body and leave him weak and sick. Guarma, the so called paradise that Dutch was so hellbent on is what ultimately seals Arthur's fate and condemns him to die

I also think Guarma helps to affirm Dutch's delusions of grandeur, he is thriving while he is killing among the gang's most notorious killers, and when the gang takes down a navy battleship, one of the most fearsome symbols of the times, I can see why Dutch says to Arthur in chapter 6, "After all the BATTLES we fought?"

After this chapter too, Dutch starts going after the army, kills Cornwall, etc.

Side note, have you noticed that every vehicle Dutch boards, crashes?

The trolley in Saint Denis, the Antenor, the Army ship with the Wapiti horses, everything he touches crashes and burns literally.

But his propensity to destroy is useful in Guarma. He shows a knack for it when using sugar to blow up the refinery and caused enough noise and distraction to rescue Javier, whose loyalty to Dutch is then pledged even further.

A highlight for Dutch's mental decline for me is his justification for killing the old lady. He first says that she was going to betray them because she said something in Spanish, but more moments later, when Arthur asks what she said, Dutch replies, "It was in her eyes, and how she was leading us." In the span of a few minutes at best, Dutch says one thing and turns around to tell a different story. I know this scene gets memed, but it shows how the charismatic conman can't even keep up with his own lies.

Guarma is important because it shows that Dutch's dream of simply sailing away from all of his problems isn't going to work. Guarma is a tropical paradise like Tahiti, but its controlled by an authoritarian regime and people are enslaved to work on sugar plantations. It shows that Dutch's dreams of a paradise is nothing but a pipe dream as there are problems no matter where they go. It wouldn't be long until the French would start to colonize Tahiti in 1903, so in four years "civilization" would come to the island, and Dutch would be robbing and fighting French troops instead of American troops.

I do love how Guarma has Arthur stuck with Dutch, Micah, Bill, and Javier. It's a good turning point for his redemption, he's literally stuck in a hellish environment with the worst of the gang, and the antagonists of both games.

Contrary to popular opinion, I like Guarma because the missions are insane and then when you finally get back to America, Arthur is forced to reflect on all the chaos he just experienced.

Guarma in RDR2 and Mexico in RDR1 are very important in the story. They're like Jesus' desert, they're an epiphany for the main character. They help the morally grey protagonist take a side, whether he likes it or not. They force the character to come to terms with the simple truth that his troubles are the troubles of the world and his goals are a mcguffin that serves to distract him from what is truly important - redemption. Throughout the entire story the protagonists are selfish and the circumstances, just like the Strange Man, just like the Blind Man, just like Landon Ricketts, are always warning - you will be punished for this selfishness and you will see suffering wherever you go.

Years ago there was a r/askhistorian question about the feasibility of Dutch's plan to move to Tahiti and 'harvest mangoes.' It was quite informative and ultimately within historical context, Dutch and the Gang would not only struggle but also standout from the rest of the natives and French colonial authorities. If Dutch and the Gang showed up with cash and 'wanting to settle', it would be too big of a red flag for the locals to overlook. The French would more than likely look into the group past and contact their port of origin for more information. With regards to mangoes, it can be grown in Tahiti but there is simply no markets to export to in 1899. Oranges was the cash crop at the time; however, an orange blight outbreak led the US to ban the importation of oranges from the Pacific Islands. So the Gang would have zero means of making income before being arrested and sent back.

the only complaint I have in this chapter is that "Lakay" on the map isn't written in cursive like the other camps

0:34 It struck me on my nth playthrough that here, Dutch comes through the door, having no idea what to do. Then he looks towards Arthur at the window—and what is right beside him on the wall? A painting. Of a boat. He really is at his wit's end and the first thing that comes to him is what they do, which is the opposite of a rationally thought-out plan.
