There Is Only One Humane Way to End the Endless Suffering of Kittens

The streets of Istanbul are filled with more kittens than anyone could ever count. Around almost every corner, tiny lives are fighting a silent battle just to survive another day. Many people smile when they see adorable kittens on the street, take a photo, pet them for a moment, and believe this is simply a beautiful part of nature. But for those of us who dedicate our lives to street cats and animal rescue, the reality looks very different. Behind every cute kitten is often a mother cat exhausted from giving birth again and again, and behind those innocent eyes is a daily struggle against hunger, disease, infections, traffic, cold, heat, and countless dangers. When you have witnessed enough kitten rescue stories, carried sick stray kittens to veterinary clinics, and watched fragile babies lose their fight for life, seeing another litter of kittens on the streets no longer makes you happy—it breaks your heart. As someone who has spent years caring for stray cats, feeding street cats, rescuing abandoned kittens, and helping injured animals, I believe there is one humane and scientifically supported way to reduce this endless cycle of suffering: spaying and neutering through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). Some people criticize cat sterilization and claim that widespread spay and neuter programs will make cats disappear, but responsible population management is not about ending the existence of cats—it is about preventing generations of kittens from being born into suffering. Cat rescue should not begin only after a kitten becomes sick, injured, starving, or orphaned. True animal rescue also means preventing that suffering before it begins. Every mother cat that is safely spayed means she will never again have to exhaust herself raising litter after litter on dangerous streets, and every successful TNR operation means fewer vulnerable kittens will be forced to fight for survival. This is why I will continue feeding stray cats, rescuing kittens, treating sick and injured cats, and supporting spay and neuter programs whenever I can. I know I cannot save every cat in Istanbul, and I know I cannot solve the stray cat population problem alone. But every cat rescue matters, every TNR matters, and every life spared from unnecessary suffering matters. When I put my head on my pillow at night, I sleep peacefully knowing that somewhere on the streets there is one less exhausted mother searching desperately for food for her babies, and one less litter of tiny kittens facing a cruel battle they never chose to fight.
