Got it. Moral of story, buy a house, but don't buy too much house.

I bought a home in 2020 and my total expenses (mortgage, maintenance, taxes, insurance) are cheaper than renting my own property would be. I invest the difference and build more wealth. Owning my home builds equity, gives inflation protection, and means not dealing with a landlord telling me what's allowed. My finances and lifestyle are definitely better than if I rented this whole time.

Edit: to give more details, I bought in the U.S. with a 3% 30-year fixed-rate mortgage and a 20% down payment with total expenses being 25% of my income. I agree I got lucky, but I also agree that buying a home you can comfortably afford is usually better than renting. My total housing expenses have increased by only 8% since 2020 while average rents have increased by 40%. I ran the numbers comparing buying in 2020 to investing my down payment instead, and buying comes out ahead because my housing expenses are so much lower than rent now and I invest the difference.

Turning $7k into $41k isn't about luck — it's consistency, discipline and choosing the right assets. 📈💰 The real challenge is staying patient when progress feels slow. Good spending habits, good saving habits and very very importantly investing into good appreciating assets can be very very life changing... ❤️❤️

Diversification and personal risk appetite is key! One thing that is certain is the depreciation in fiat. Since the establishment of the Federal Reserve in 1913, the U.S. dollar has lost approximately 97% of its value. Pay off debt, have a emergency fund and Buy assets! Don't put all of your eggs in one basket, understand what your investing in and take calculated risk! That's my moto!

I built my own house with my bare hands. Even as a kid, I knew I didn't want a 30 yr mortgage. It's not for everybody, and it was a 2 year process, but now I live on passive income and investments, I'm happy with beans and rice with lots of meat, ha ha. If you have the inclination, you should consider it.

I lost my mom just over a year ago and was able to be at her bedside before she passed....being able to thank her for everything and shed tears together before she was unconscious was a huge gift. If you have good parents, cherish the moments you have with them...when gone, they are a void that cannot ever be filled by anyone else. ❤ thank you for sharing your dad story...I probably would have said the same thing you said if I was that young. Life experience is a wonderful teacher.

I've bought and sold a few houses but the happiest i've ever been was living in a 1 bedroom apartment that's convenient / walkable to everything.

Not owning a home has emotional costs people rarely talk about. As the years pass, rent keeps rising while energy, health, and income slowly decline. The feeling of never truly belonging anywhere creates a quiet, constant anxiety. With age, finding a place becomes harder, and the thought of having to move again feels exhausting rather than exciting. When health issues appear, even small things like shifting homes or negotiating leases become overwhelming. A rented space never fully becomes yours, and that lack of permanence weighs on the mind. While rent rises with inflation, security does not. And in moments of financial or medical crisis, not having a home to fall back on can feel deeply unsettling.
