A Panther tank stands at the bottom of a small town in the Belgian Ardennes, twenty steps from the river Ourthe, with the number one hundred and eleven painted on its turret and the roof plate behind that turret pushed inward instead of outward. Metal bends outward when a shell goes off inside a tank. It bends inward when the weight comes from above. This video follows that one detail back to the winter of nineteen forty-four, when the reconnaissance battalion of the One Hundred and Sixteenth Panzer Division, the Windhund, broke American resistance south of Houffalize and the town changed hands for twenty-seven days.
