  I am unsurprised,  Americans use a lot of words that they don't understand.  In general, they don't understand very much at all.

  In the US having a fire department to put out a fire in your house, or a highways authority to build roads, or a police department for enforcing laws is acceptable and seemingly not socialism but someone to look after your life and save your life is called socialism. That's dumb. It's so dumb to think like that because the rest of the advanced world thinks social health care is a basic human right.

  "Socialism" is just a word Americans have been conditioned to mean "bad." It's like when people train their dogs. The dog doesn't understand the trainer's commands as words, just that the particular sound means they have to behave a certain way. It's pure Pavlovian stimulus-response.

  Canadian here. When I was 57, a known birth defect (a slightly deformed heart valve) finally caught up with me. I was extremely ill, spent months in assorted hospitals had multiple surgeries and underwent years of care from many specialists. Now I’m 67, still being monitored by a bunch of specialists and still undergoing occasional surgeries to correct issues that continue to crop up. The total care cost for 10 years? - $0! &nbsp;Now that I’m over 65 my prescription drugs are also paid for. <br><br>If that’s communism, then Long Live Big Brother!

  I call it basic Civilisation - if some people in the US want to call it Socialism that&apos;s their perogative - and their loss if they don&apos;t want basic rights.

  UK/US citizen here. After living in both countries for many years I feel well qualified to speak on this topic. When I moved to California I was stunned by how little the average American knew about so many things. From political systems to Geography. Sadly many seemed to not have any desire to learn. They liked shopping, talking loudly and having ‘fun’. Eventually in my 30’s I grew tired of that lifestyle. I will always love California but I have zero desire to live there again.

  Years ago I had to visit one of our US sites for work, and the presenteeism was mind bogglingly awful. On my last day there, one of my coworkers said that they&apos;d logged my daily arrival and departure times and reported me. (Arriving <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkde5ba6ATY&amp;t=525">8:45</a> for a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkde5ba6ATY&amp;t=540">9:00</a> start, leaving at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkde5ba6ATY&amp;t=1065">17:45</a> after finishing at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkde5ba6ATY&amp;t=1050">17:30</a> - not good enough apparently)<br><br>I got back to the UK office and my manager just laughed. &quot;Take tomorrow off, you&apos;ve already worked the hours. In fact take the rest of today as well as you&apos;ve just endured a shitty fortnight.&quot;
