  I am a U.S. citizen and proud of my British heritage.  No people on Earth benefited more from the results of the Seven Years' War than the American colonies.  It drove Britain near to bankruptcy and we should have been more than happy to pay our share of the costs of that war.  Despite our past extreme ingratitude, Britain will you please take us back and thereby save us from that deranged lunatick who is currently running our country?  As chastised children who have learned their lesson, I promise we will now behave and obediently pay up all the taxes and with interest to boot.

  Guy Fawkes wasn't the leader of the Gunpowder Plot, that was Robert Catesby.  Fawkes was chosen to carry out the attack on Parliament because he had been in the military and had experience with explosives.  The Gunpowder Plot did of course give us the great line that the last person to enter the Houses of Parliament with honest intentions was Guy Fawkes.

  The battle was due to take place in Hastings, but it was half-day closing, so they took a picnic into the countryside!

  One thing I've noticed, particularly from Americans, is when people talk about the worst aspects of the BRITISH empire, they tend to say 'the ENGLISH did this and the ENGLISH did that...' giving the Welsh, Scottish and Irish a free pass.

  I worked in Salisbury selling tickets for the bus to Stonehenge. A bloke from the US said "I'd like to go to the stone age". I said "Well you'll need to build a time machine. All I can offer is a bus ticket".

  I did hear an American ask why they modelled St Pauls on their Capital Building ... some knowledgeable Americans around them dropped and shook their heads in embarrassment and disbelief

  We don&apos;t read Shakespeare &quot;in silence&quot; in school. We read it in class with each part assigned to a different person. Sometimes the person reading doesn&apos;t understand what&apos;s written, or even doesn&apos;t know how to say it, and that&apos;s when the teacher steps in and we learn something.<br><br>I think the most annoying thing foreigners do (and this is not just Americans, most everyone does this to - basically everywhere foreign) is simply not appreciating, or trying to appreciate, the sheer scale of everything, in time, distance and culture. Thinking that you can look around London for a couple of days and you&apos;ve &quot;seen Britain&quot;, or even worse, &quot;seen Europe&quot;. Or watching the movie &apos;Amadeus&apos; and thinking you know about &quot;old-time&quot; Europe.
